عَذّبوا الجُثّةَ
They tortured the body
حَتّى طَلعَ الفَجْرُ مُنهَكاً وقامَ الديكُ يحتجُّ
until dawn broke, exhausted, and the rooster crowed in protest
غَرَسوا في لَحْمِها السَّنانير. جَلَدوها بِأسلاكِ الكَهْرُباء
They drove nails into its flesh. They whipped it with electric wires
عَلَّقوها مِنَ المِرْوَحَة
They hung it from the ceiling fan
عِنْدَما تَعِبَ الجَلّادونَ أَخيراً
When the torturers finally tired
وَاسْتراحوا، حَرّكَت الجُثّةُ إصْبعَها الصَّغير
and rested, the body moved its little finger
فَتَحَتْ عَينيها الجَريحَتَيْن
It opened its wounded eyes
وَتَمْتَمَتْ شَيْئاً
and whispered something
هَل كانَتْ تَطلُبُ ماءً؟ هَلْ كانَتْ تُريدُ خُبزاً يا تُرى؟
Was it asking for water? Was it asking for bread, do you think?
هَل كانَتْ تَلْعَنُهُم أَم تُطالِبُ بِالمَزيد؟
Was it cursing them or was it asking for more?
ماذا كانَت الجُثّةُ تُريد؟
