Ich sah ein Knaben spielen, von Eschenholz sein Bogen war,
Ich sah ihn eben zielen, als schon sein Pfeil entflogen war.
Ein Falken hört ich schreien, wild warf er sich ins Blau hinauf,
Er konnt′ sich nicht befreien, denn mit ihm strieg das Grauen auf.
Durch seines Fanges Wehren der Pfeil sich wildzersplittert bog,
Und neben ihm im Leeren der Jubelschrei des Jungen flog.-
Ich hört die Schreie beid' und wußte nicht, wer heller klang,
Ob, der aus wildem Leid′ dem grauen Raubgesellen sprang.
Ob der aus wilder Wonn' der Knabenbrust heraus entschlalt,-
Sie flogen beid' zur Sonn′ und waren beid′ jahrtausendalt.

Millennia Old

I saw a boy playing, his bow was made of ash wood,
I saw him taking aim, as his arrow had already flown.
I heard a falcon cry, wildly it threw itself into the blue,
It could not break free, for horror rose with it.
Through its prey's resistance the arrow wildly splintered and bent,
And next to it, in the void, the boy's jubilant cry flew.-
I heard both cries and did not know which sounded brighter,
Whether it sprang from wild sorrow, from the grey predator.
Or from wild joy that burst from the boy's chest,-
They both flew towards the sun and were both millennia old.
