W zardzewiałej ziemi - chwasty i kamienie,

Zmarszczki dróg na próżno żłobionych przez wieki,
Linie papilarne niespełnionej rzeki.
W zardzewiałej ziemi - kości, sierść i zęby -
Proch, co skrywa diament wypchnięty z jej głębin.
A nad nią błękitne po chmurach wspomnienie -
Rozedrgana spiekota, ulewne płomienie.
Po tej zardzewiałej ziemi ludzie pokrzywdzeni
Zabłąkani w koleinach wyschniętych strumieni
Wydłubują strzępy sierści, kości i diamenty
Majacząc na słońcu, śniąc chłodne odmęty.
Majaczące plemię spragnione krynicy
Zbrojne w kości przodków - tłucze się i krzyczy.
Wściekła kłótnia wstrząsa niebiosa hałasem:
Czy Bóg - czy rozsądek ma być ich kompasem?
Przez siebie uwielbieni i znienawidzeni
Depczą mylne szlaki wyschniętych strumieni
Z tą prawdą tak niemiłą i świętym i łotrom:
Bóg sprawił, że wciąż idą...
Rozsądek - że dotrą!

The Dried-Up Streams

In the rusted ground - weeds and stones,
In the rusted ground - dried-up streams.
The wrinkles of roads carved in vain for centuries,
The fingerprints of a river unfulfilled.
In the rusted ground - bones, fur and teeth -
Dust, which hides the diamond pushed out of its depths.
And above it, a blue memory of clouds -
Shimmering heat, torrential flames.
On this rusted ground, people wronged
Strayed in the ruts of dried-up streams
Dig out scraps of fur, bones and diamonds
Hallucinating in the sun, dreaming of cool depths.
A hallucinating tribe, thirsty for a wellspring
Armed with the bones of their ancestors - they fight and scream.
A mad quarrel shakes the heavens with its noise:
Should God - or reason - be their compass?
Self-adored and despised by themselves and rogues
They tread the false trails of dried-up streams
With this truth so unpleasant to saints and villains:
God made them keep going...
