O céu parecia um inferno
Estavam os astros em guerra
E a ribeira mal sustinha
A grande cheia que vinha
Pelas vertentes da serra

Vendo a ribeira a subir
O moleiro quis fugir
Levando o filho nos braços
Pela ponte carcomida
Já velhinha e ressequida
A desfazer-se em pedaços

Mas ai, a ponte quebrou-se
O moleiro como fosse
Na cheia da ribeirinha
Levou o filho consigo
E nunca mais moeu trigo

By that old mill
On the bank of the stream
That winds through the valleys
Was an impassive witness
To the most horrific tragedy
That had ever happened in my village

On that winter's night
The sky seemed like hell
The celestial bodies were at war
And the stream could barely hold back
The great flood that was coming
Down the mountain slopes

Seeing the stream rising
The miller wanted to flee
Carrying his son in his arms
Across the dilapidated bridge
Already old and dried up
Falling apart in pieces

But alas, the bridge collapsed
And the miller, as it were
In the flood of the stream
Took his son with him
And that old mill
Never ground wheat again
