It's always exciting when we get to share new music from any of our
Big Machine Label Group artists and today we are sharing the new
Album from Midland. It's their sophomore project, Let It Roll
And we've been going track by track, getting Midland's insight into
Each of these songs and "Lost In The Night." I have to admit
I was a little caught off guard when this one first started playing
Because it suddenly caught my attention and I thought, "Who is that
Singing?" And I actually had to look it up on the liner notes. So
First, talk to me about writing "Lost In The Night" and what was
It about this particular song that warranted having Cam sing leads?
Just a quick anecdote about that song is that that music, I had
Written that progression when my cousin Miles passed away and
Didn't really know what to do with it, but it was definitely this
Melancholy cluster of chords. I don't personally enjoy writing
Lyrics by myself, I'm just more of a collaborative writer
I don't know if it's laziness or just self-doubt but when we got
Together and were throwing ideas around with Marv and JT, this
Was at the end of a couple day stint writing and we were, I think
All kind of fresh out of ideas and those chords came out and then
We were in the Midwest, we were on tour with Thomas Rhett
And we'd been on a long haul and all of us hailed from
The West Coast and I think there's a certain West Coast
Yearning in a lot of ways, yearning for Texas, Arizona
Maybe out the West. And that song kind of set itself out West
Marv's from California
Marv's from California, Cam's from California, Jess and I both spent
A lot of time— Jess is from Oregon, from the coast, from the Pacific
So that immediately kind of happened when we got this progression
And, and immediately we were just chasing that Eagles thing and
It was kind of like, "Alright, if Dean Dillon had written with J
D. Souther and with Glenn Frey and the boys," like, that's what we
Were chasing. We wanted that Marina del Rey kind of meets Tequila
Sunrise type vibe and from there we created that progression that
Cameron had and then it really was just everybody's like, "Okay
And then this, and then that," and then it just pieced together
It was very collaborative and out of all the songs that we'd written
When we wrote that one I feel like it was really just piecing
Very colorful lyrically and there's not a lot of lyrics too if
You look at them compared to the amount of lyrics for other songs
It's kind of short, but it's all very colorful content, right?
Yeah, and then it's the choice to have Jess and Cameron sing lead on
Some songs was just a page out of our live book. All three of us are
Singers so that song was a song that, for a lot of reasons, was I
Think deeply personal to Cameron and he wanted a shot at
Singing it and that's the only way that song could have been
Cut. He did such an emotional, great performance. It really
Is awesome and again, people have compared us and we've
Always refused it, but we worship them, the Eagles, and the
Eagles took turns singing songs and that's what a band does
Well, if you've never heard Cam sing leads on one of
Midland's songs, listen up. This is "Lost In The Night"
On Big Machine Radio, brand new music from Midland
