Schnarcht ruhig fort in eu'ren Nestern
Und habt auf mein Gekreisch nicht Acht
Die Welt ist akkurat wie gestern
Die Nacht so schwarz wie jede Nacht!
Auch welche Zeit, will niemand wissen
'S gibt keine Zeit in uns'ren Tagen
Duckt euch nur in die warmen Kissen
Die Glocke, die hat nichts geschlagen!

Lass keiner sich im Schlaf berücken
Vom - vulgo Zeitgeist - Antichrist
Und sollte wen ein Älplein drücken
Dankt Gott, dass es nichts Ärg'res ist!
Das Murren, Meistern, Zerr'n und Zanken
Das Träumen tut es freilich nicht
Drum schluckt sie 'runter die Gedanken
Bewahrt das Feuer und das Licht!

Auch wackelt nicht im bösen Willen
An eu'rem Bett und räkelt nicht
Die Zipfelmütze zieht im Stillen
Zufrieden über's Angesicht!
Der Hund im Stall, der Mann beim Weibe
Die Magd beim Knecht, wie Recht und Pflicht
So ruht und rührt euch nicht beileibe
Auf dass der Stadt kein Schad' geschicht!

Und wann die Nacht, wie alle Nächte
Vollendet hat den trägen Lauf
Dann steigt, doch stets zuerst das rechte
Bein aus den Federn, sittsam auf!
Labt euch an dem Zichorientranke
Und tretet eure Mühlen gern
Freut euch des Lebens voller Danke
Und lobt – nächst Gott – den Landesherrn!

Just duck into the warm pillows
The bell has not struck!

Don't let anyone trick you in your sleep
From - vulgarly speaking - the Antichrist of our age
And should some petty ailment plague you
Thank God it's nothing worse!
The grumbling, complaining, nagging and arguing
Dreaming certainly won't help
So swallow your thoughts
Keep the fire and light burning!

Don't waver in your evil will either
By your bed, and don't stretch out
The pointed cap moves contentedly
Over your face in the dark!
The dog in the barn, the man with his woman
The maid with the servant, as is right and proper
Rest and don't stir at all
Lest harm befall the city!

And when the night, like all nights
Has completed its languid course
Then, but always first the right one
Leg out of bed, decently up!
Refresh yourselves with chicory potion
And gladly tread your mills
Rejoice in life with all gratitude
And praise - next to God - the sovereign!
