Der Bruder

Ich komm' raus aus dem kühlen Fast-Food-Restaurant
Am frühen Nachmittag in Gottes eignem Land
Zwischen Cottondale und Springfield, irgendwo am Highway 231.
Wie ein Faustschlag kommt die Hitze und kein Windhauch regt
Sich, die Coladose in meiner Hand beschlägt
Und das große, grüne Mietauto da vorne auf dem Parkplatz, das ist meins.
Drei Tage hab' ich noch, das heißt, drei Tage nur
'Ne Woche Urlaub, viel zu kurz für so 'ne Tour
Du bleibst immer an der Oberfläche, tiefer siehst du einfach nicht.
Ich lass' mich hinters Steuer fallen, lass' den Motor an
Die Knöpfchen gehn von ganz alleine runter und dann
Faucht die Klimaanlage mir den Alabama Sommer vom Gesicht.

Und als ich aufseh steht da dieser Mann neben mir
Ein Schwarzer und er legt die Hand auf meine Tür
Legt seine Hand auf den Türgriff aus blitzendem Chrom.
Und er hält ein bekritzeltes Stück Pappe an
Die grüngetönte Seitenscheibe und ich kann
Mit Mühe nur ein Wort entziffern, irgendwas wie "Home".
Total daneben und ziemlich abgerissen sieht er aus.
Pass auf, gleicht holt er seine 44er Magnum raus
Genau wie ich es im Kino tausend mal gesehen hab'.
Er lächelt müde und seine Zähne schimmern weiß
Aus seinen Haaren und von seinem Gesicht perlt der Schweiß
In glänzenden Rinnsalen in sein zerschliss'nes T-Shirt hinab.

Und mein Polster ist weich und das Six-Pack zur Hand
Und der Motor säuselt wie ein Morgenwind im Stand
Und das Leder ist glatt und kühl an meiner Haut.
Du hast ein Auto, das ist dreimal so lang wie dick
Du bist allein und du hast Zeit, du meidest seinen Blick
Hast du Angst oder was, oder denkst du, dass er dir die Cola klaut?

Und ich schüttel' den Kopf, wirklich Mann, tut mir leid.
Das Thermometer steht auf 104 Grad Fahrenheit.
Die Reifen quietschen beim Rangier'n auf dem weichen, klebrigen Asphalt.
Und ich seh ihn auf dem glühend heißen Parkplatz stehn
Ich kann ganz deutlich dieses traurige Lächeln sehn
Und im Rückspiegel die große, unschlüssige, gotttverlassene Gestalt.
Die Straße zieht sich im flirrernden Licht vor mir hin
Mit geht diese Begegnung einfach nicht aus dem Sinn
Wie er fragend in der abgeriss'nen Latzhose vor mir stand.
Und du malst dir gleich 'nen ganzen Horrorfilm aus, -
Ein Feldarbeiter war das, wollte nichts als nachhaus
Und du lässt den Menschenbruder einfach stehn am Straßenrand!

"Hast ihm das Fenster nicht mal einen Spaltbreit aufgemacht
Du hast nur weggesehen, nur weggesehen!" grummelt der V8.
Und die Air Condition zischelt: "Ein schöner Menschenfreund bist du!"
Und die Reifen summen: "Hat man sowas schon gesehn
Lässt den Bruder auf dem sonnenglüh'nden Parkplatz stehn!"
Und die Fugen in der Fahrbahn rumpeln: "So kommst du nicht zur Ruh'!".

Die nächste Ausfahrt raus und wenden und den Weg zurück.
'Ne halbe Stunde Weg und mit 'nem kleinen bisschen Glück
Ist er noch da und ich schwör, dann fahr' ich ihn, wohin immer er will.
Lass ihn noch da sein, nur 'ne Viertelstunde noch
Nur drei Minuten, geh nicht weg, Mann, ich fahr dich doch!
Und da endlich liegt der Parkplatz und er ist verwaist und still.
Manchmal glaub' ich ihn zu sehn da am Straßenrand
Manchmal könnt' ich schwör'n, ich hab' ihn wiedererkannt
Ist es nicht der, der die Wäsche holt und dir das Essen bringt?
Ist es nicht der, der deinen Wagen durch die Waschanlage fährt
Im Hotel die Messinggriffe putzt, die Hecke schert
Der zum Piano in der Bar für angetrunk'ne Nadelstreifen Gospel singt?

Immer der, der auf der falschen Stadtseite wohnt
Immer den härteren Job und immer schlechter entlohnt
Immer der, den man einfach mit "Du" anspricht.
Immer der mit dem zerschlissenen Overall
Immer wach, immer Alarm, immer und überall
Immer der mit dem enttäuschten Lächeln im Gesicht.

Vielleicht war es der Messias, der nach zweitausend Jahr'n
Noch mal gekommen ist, und du, du hast ihn nicht gefahr'n
Mit deinem chromblitzenden, air-condition-daunenweichen Thron.
Oh, das kriegst du nicht so einfach wieder gutgemacht
Du hast den Bruder nicht nach Haus gebracht!
Und einem Vater nicht seinen verlorenen Sohn.

The Brother

I step out of the cool fast-food restaurant
In the early afternoon, in God's own land
Between Cottondale and Springfield, somewhere on Highway 231.
The heat hits like a punch, not a breath of wind stirs
The cola can in my hand is sweating
And that big, green rental car over there in the parking lot, that's mine.
Three days I have left, that is, only three days
A week's vacation, way too short for such a tour
You always stay on the surface, you simply don't see deeper.
I slump behind the wheel, start the engine
The buttons go down all by themselves and then
The air conditioning blows the Alabama summer off my face.

And when I look up, this man is standing next to me
A black man, and he puts his hand on my door
Places his hand on the chrome door handle.
And he holds up a scribbled piece of cardboard
Against the green-tinted side window and I can
Barely decipher a word, something like "Home".
He looks totally out of place and pretty ragged.
Watch out, he's about to pull out his .44 Magnum
Just like I've seen it a thousand times in the movies.
He smiles wearily, and his teeth gleam white
Sweat beads from his hair and face
In glistening rivulets down his tattered T-shirt.

And my seat is soft and the six-pack is at hand
And the engine purrs like a morning breeze at idle
And the leather is smooth and cool against my skin.
You have a car that's three times as long as it is wide
You're alone and you have time, you avoid his gaze
Are you scared or what, or do you think he'll steal your cola?

And I shake my head, really man, I'm sorry.
The thermometer reads 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
The tires squeal as I maneuver on the soft, sticky asphalt.
And I see him standing in the scorching parking lot
I can clearly see that sad smile
And in the rearview mirror the large, hesitant, godforsaken figure.
The road stretches before me in the shimmering light
I just can't get this encounter out of my head
How he stood there questioningly in his torn overalls.
And you immediately imagine a whole horror movie, -
That was a field worker, he just wanted to go home
And you just leave your fellow man standing by the side of the road!

"Didn't you even open the window a crack for him
You just looked away, just looked away!" grumbles the V8.
And the air conditioning hisses: "You're a fine humanitarian!"
And the tires hum: "Has anyone ever seen such a thing
Leaving your brother standing in the sun-scorched parking lot!"
And the cracks in the road rumble: "That's no way to find peace!".

Take the next exit and turn around and head back.
Half an hour's drive and with a little bit of luck
He'll still be there and I swear, then I'll drive him wherever he wants to go.
Just let him still be there, just a quarter of an hour more
Just three minutes, don't go, man, I'll give you a ride!
And then finally, there's the parking lot and it's deserted and silent.
Sometimes I think I see him there by the side of the road
Sometimes I could swear I've recognized him again
Isn't that the one who does the laundry and brings you your food?
Isn't that the one who runs your car through the car wash
Polishes the brass handles at the hotel, trims the hedge
Who sings gospel to the piano in the bar for drunken pinstripes?

Always the one who lives on the wrong side of town
Always the harder job and always worse paid
Always the one you just address with "you".
Always the one with the torn overalls
Always awake, always alert, always and everywhere
Always the one with the disappointed smile on his face.

Oh, you can't just make up for that so easily
