Der letzte Ferienabend in dem quirl'gen Sonnenland
Ein letztes Mahl gemeinsam in dem Straßenrestaurant
Brotkrumen, halbvolle Gläser, Rotweinflecken auf Tischdecken aus Papier

Den ganzen Abend haben sie zu uns 'rübergeseh'n
Sie zahlen, stehen auf und er bleibt kurz neben mir stehn
Beugt sich zu mir herunter und sagt leise zu mir im Gehn:

Ich will etwas erwidern und ich suche nah dem Wort
Doch eh' ich es noch find', sind sie mit einem Lächeln fort
In den Stuhl zurückgesunken, lass ich den Blick in die Tischrunde geh'n
Zum dem großen jungen Mann, der mir da gegenübersitzt
In dessen dunklen Augen Witz und Aberwitz aufblitzt
Aus denen Schabernack und alle Traurigkeit der Welt mich zugleich anseh'n
Spaßvogel, Weltverbesserer, ein bisschen, wie ich war
Und ich seh' mich in ihm wieder, noch einmal ein junger Narr
Gestern habe ich ihn noch in seinen Kindersitz gesteckt
Heut sitzt da dieser Grizzly, der sich räkelt und sich streckt

Dann da zu meiner Rechten, der der alles anders macht
Aus dessen Widersprüchen mich mein Spiegelbild anlacht

Der zärtlich ist und weich sein kann und eine harte Nuss
Der frei ist, ein Rebell, der furchtlos und allein gegen den Strom anschwimmt
Da ist das junge Mädchen, mit dem langen dunklen Haar
Voll Lebenslust und Übermut, ganz und gar unzähmbar
Mit einem Willen, dem sich besser nichts entgegenstellt
Mit einem Blick, an dem jeglicher Widerstand zerschellt
Mit einem Lachen, das auch den dunkelsten Tag aufhellt

Da ist die Frau an meiner Seite, die diese Arche mit mir lenkt
Die mir ihre schöne Seele und ihre Klugheit schenkt
Die ich liebe und an der ich jedes kleinste Wort und jede Regung mag
Die Freundin, die Komplizin, die mit mir zusammenhält
Wie Pech und Schwefel, zwei gegen die ganze Welt
Mit der ich jeden Lebensturm durchqueren kann und jeden ganz normalen Tag
Und ich sitz' da vor Kopf, noch immer stumm, schon sonderbar
Da kommt ein Wildfremder an deinen Tisch und macht dir klar:
Du hast alles, was du wolltest! Was um alles in der Welt
Wieviel unwichtiges Zeug dir oft den Blick darauf verstellt!

The last evening of our vacation in this bustling, sun-kissed land
A final meal together in a streetside restaurant
Bread crumbs, half-full glasses, red wine stains on paper tablecloths
We've eaten and drank, shared stories, and laughed so much
The last glass, but this time truly the last, has been brought
Doodles and stick figures, and the change already on the plate before me
At the next table, only the gray-haired couple remains
From Texas, those golf pants, the blow-dried hair, of course!
They've been glancing over at us all evening
They pay, stand up, and he stops briefly beside me

"What a lucky man you are!"

I want to reply, searching for the right words

Then, to my right, the one who does everything differently
From whose contradictions my reflection smiles back at me
The one who, when there are two paths, always takes the difficult one
The one who rebels, who has to learn everything the hard way
Who is tender and can be soft, yet a tough nut to crack
Who is free, a rebel, who fearlessly swims against the current alone
There's the young girl with the long dark hair
Full of zest for life and exuberance, completely untamable
With a will that better not be opposed
With a look that shatters any resistance
With a laughter that brightens even the darkest day
"What a lucky man you are!"

There is the woman by my side, who steers this ark with me
Who gifts me her beautiful soul and her wisdom
Whom I love and whose every little word and gesture I cherish
The friend, the accomplice, who stands by me
Like tar and feather, two against the whole world
With whom I can traverse any life storm and every ordinary day
And I sit there, speechless, still amazed, it's strange
A stranger comes to your table and makes you realize:
You have everything you ever wanted! Why on earth
Do so many unimportant things often obscure your view of it!
Sometimes you need a stranger to hold up a mirror:
"What a lucky man you are!"
