I played with them when I was in high school, that band Mountain Smoke
I told you about, we opened for Pure Prairie League
When I was still in high school, in Oklahoma City
And, we just hit it off that night, we jammed together
And played on stage together and
And, we even- oh, it's funny, we got a better review, than they did that night

But, uh, anyway, uhm, many years later, this was probably three or four years later
I was livin' in Los Angeles, so a friend of mine was going out there to audition
And he said, "Hey, I'm gonna audition for Pure Prairie League, you wanna go?"
I said, "Yeah, I played a gig with 'em when I was in high school
I'll go see if they even remember me", you know

Go along and watch the audition and
And, I introduced myself to 'em, they go
"Aren't you that kid from Oklahoma that plays all the different instruments?"
And I go, "Yeah"
They said, "Would you be interested in this gig?"
And my friend's looking at me like, "Oh, great, thanks a lot"
And I said, "No, I really wouldn't", I said, "I'm playing with Byron and
Lovin' life here and, da-da-da-da-da", and
They said, "Well, come back tomorrow and just jam with us
Just come have some fun"

I said, "Okay", so took my electric guitar and amp and got to-
Runnin' all the way up and go play with 'em and it was kinda fun
You know, after a lot of years of not playing
Much music that really, you know, rocked pretty hard and
And, I said, "Man, I'll come, I'll come play with you for a while", so

Ah, away I went and made three records with 'em and, had a couple of hits and
Got to be on "Solid Gold", "American Band Stand" and all these
Crazy TV shows, "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" and
And so for, for a young guy of 21, maybe somethin' like that
I was getting a great taste of what the music business was really like
What touring was really like with promoters and the-the-the real deal
You know, and it was a great education, I wouldn't, I wouldn't trade that for nothin'
And I had a, I had a good time, it was good guys

Ich spielte mit ihnen, als ich in der High School war, diese Band Mountain Smoke,
von der ich dir erzählt habe, wir waren die Vorgruppe für Pure Prairie League,

Und wir verstanden uns an diesem Abend einfach prächtig, wir jammten zusammen

und wir bekamen sogar – oh, es ist lustig, wir bekamen eine bessere Kritik als sie an diesem Abend.

Aber, äh, jedenfalls, ähm, viele Jahre später, das war wahrscheinlich drei oder vier Jahre später,
lebte ich in Los Angeles, und ein Freund von mir ging dorthin, um vorzuspielen.
Und er sagte: „Hey, ich spiele bei Pure Prairie League vor, willst du mitkommen?“
Ich sagte: „Ja, ich habe mal einen Gig mit ihnen gespielt, als ich in der High School war.
Ich gehe mal schauen, ob sie sich überhaupt an mich erinnern“, weißt du.

Ich ging also mit und sah beim Vorspielen zu, und
ich stellte mich ihnen vor, und sie sagten:
„Bist du nicht dieser Junge aus Oklahoma, der all die verschiedenen Instrumente spielt?“
Und ich sagte: „Ja.“
Sie sagten: „Hättest du Interesse an diesem Job?“
Und mein Freund schaut mich an, so nach dem Motto: „Oh, toll, vielen Dank auch.“
Und ich sagte: „Nein, eigentlich nicht“, ich sagte: „Ich spiele mit Byron und
genieße das Leben hier und, da-da-da-da-da“, und
sie sagten: „Na gut, komm morgen wieder und jam einfach mit uns.
Komm einfach vorbei und hab Spaß.“

Ich sagte: „Okay“, also nahm ich meine E-Gitarre und meinen Verstärker und machte mich bereit –
rannte den ganzen Weg dorthin, um mit ihnen zu spielen, und es machte irgendwie Spaß,
weißt du, nach vielen Jahren, in denen ich nicht viel Musik gespielt hatte,
die wirklich, weißt du, ziemlich rockte, und
ich sagte: „Mann, ich komme, ich spiele eine Weile mit euch“, also

Ah, zog ich los und machte drei Platten mit ihnen und hatte ein paar Hits und
durfte bei „Solid Gold“, „American Band Stand“ und all diesen
verrückten Fernsehshows dabei sein, „Don Kirshner's Rock Concert“ und
und so, für einen jungen Kerl von 21, vielleicht so um den Dreh,
bekam ich einen großartigen Vorgeschmack darauf, wie das Musikgeschäft wirklich war,
wie das Touren wirklich war, mit Promotern und dem-dem-dem echten Geschäft,
weißt du, und es war eine großartige Ausbildung, ich würde, ich würde das für nichts auf der Welt hergeben.
Und ich hatte eine, ich hatte eine gute Zeit, es waren gute Jungs.
