From journey to journey, a wandering bird I stray.

Beneath Asama's three plumes of smoke, they say,
Lies the place I was born, though I'm far away.
I'm Tokijiro of Kutsukake, don't you see?

A man who knew no woman, caring for thee,
And with a child's hand in mine, so small and free,

My eyes, they say "Forgive me," it's hard for you and me,
It's the road, my dear, the road, please understand, you see,
This is all I can do, my love, all I can be.

A man's pride, my life I pledge to thee,
With a sharply tied sedge hat, wild and free.

My duty's done, though I haven't cried, not me,
Again today, my destination's a mystery,
The wind blows through my traveling cloak, you see.
