Świat się trwali, ale tak niepewnie!...
Drzewa szumią, ale pozadrzewnie!...
A nad borem, nad dalekim borem-
Bóg porusza wichrem i przestworem.
I powiada wicher do przestworu:
"Już nie wrócę tej nocy do boru!" —
Bór się mroczy, a gwiazdy weń świecą,
A nad morzem białe mewy lecą.
Jedna mówi: "Widziałam niebiosy!"
Druga mówi: "Widziałam gwiazd losy!" —
Trzecia milczy, milczy bo widziała
Dwa po ciemku pałające ciała...

In the Dark

Bodies know who they belong to,
When they lie side by side in the dark!
Lip to lip, and hand to hand in accord,
The night reluctantly passes over them.
The world endures, but how precariously!...
The trees rustle, but beyond the trees!...
And above the forest, above the distant forest,
God stirs the wind and the expanse.
And the wind says to the expanse:
"I shall not return to the forest tonight!" —
The forest grows dim, and the stars shine into it,
And white seagulls fly over the sea.
One says: "I have seen the heavens!"
Another says: "I have seen the fate of the stars!" —
The third one is silent, silent because it saw
Two bodies burning in the dark...
