Venho assoviando uma coplita,
Que se desprende da minha alma...
Ao trote manso, na noite calma,
Quisera eu ser chamarrita.

Tenho uma dama que está distante,
Ficou nas casas cuidando o ninho...
Eu saltei cedo e abri caminhos
Com uma tropilha de égua por diante.

Rompeu o dia quando cruzei
O passo largo do arroio fundo...
O sol já vinha clareando o mundo
Que era outro quando encilhei.

E a chamarrita do assovio,
Que não me deixa andar solito,
Antes que eu desse o primeiro grito,
Disse: "Até a volta!"... e depois sumiu.

Da estância velha, sou peão do posto,
Bebo o sereno do banhadal...
Que eu reconheço, por ser "mensual",
E o que me toca, faço com gosto.

Vou levantando com a manhãzita,
Junto ao floreio que sai da goela,
Gado, rebanho e algo dela,
Que eu deixe junto com a chamarrita.

No que não tenho, tenho pensado,
Se me faz falta, ou não preciso,
Já que a fortuna daquele riso
Sempre me traz de chapéu tapeado.

E quando a lida chegar ao fim
Com a mesma copla bem assoviada,
Volto no rastro da madrugada
E a chamarrita canta pra mim.

Tropilha adiante, trote "chasqueiro",
Arreio frouxo, serviço pronto.
Saudade dela me deixa tonto,
E o que eu mais quero é chegar ligeiro.

Sou peão do posto, sei que é bendita
A minha sina que tanto prezo.
Aperto a cincha, pra Deus eu rezo...
E pra minha prenda, uma chamarrita.

The Station Worker and the Whistle

I whistle a ditty as I come,
It flows freely from my soul...
At a gentle trot, in the calm of the night,
I wish I was a whistle.

I have a lady who is far away,
She stayed at home to tend the nest...
I left early and set out on my way,
With a heard of mares leading the way.

Day broke as I crossed
The wide stream of the deep creek...
The sun was already brightening the world
Which was different when I saddled up.

And the whistled tune,
Which keeps me from being lonely,
Before I had even uttered a word,
Said: "Until next time!"... and then it disappeared.

On the old ranch, I'm the station worker,
I drink the dew from the marshes...
Which I know, as a "monthly" man,
And what comes my way, I do with pleasure.

I get up with the dawn,
To the tune of the birds,
Cattle, sheep and something of her,
Which I leave with the whistle.

As for what I don't have, I've thought about it,
If I need it, or not,

Always brings me luck.

And when the day is done,
With the same tune whistled clearly,
I return on the trail of the dawn
And the whistle sings to me.
