Tyle słów namawia, żeby im zaufać;
Ostrzem tnie rozumu lub pasją wybucha,
Ku niebu uniesie, lub o ziemię ciśnie.
Jednak ufać - znaczy uchylić przyłbicy
Komuś, kto się mylić może, lub źle życzyć;
Więc na cios wystawiasz to, co najwrażliwsze.
Chociaż - jeśli słowom ufać się nie daje -
Cóż pozostaje?

Tak wierzymy w miłość, kiedy się pojawi,
Życie snem nasyci i przed jawą zbawi,
A trwaniu ruch nada wzniosłym niepokojem.
Jednak kochać - znaczy połączyć się z lustrem
Które przecież zniknie i zostawi pustkę,
Jakiej nie wypełni żadna noc we dwoje.
Choć - jeśli miłości już wierzyć nie umiem -
Cóż ja rozumiem?

Na siebie liczymy, że nam starczy krzepy,
By o własnych siłach przebyć świata przepych
I mieć zeń choć tyle, co się dźwignąć zdoła.
A przecież się nieraz grunt spod stóp obsunie
I siebie samego nie potrafisz unieść
Przed własną bezsiłą chętnie chyląc czoła.
Choć - jeśli na siebie nie możesz już liczyć -
Czyż jesteś niczym?

Tyle wiar tym, którzy na siebie nie liczą
Powolność nakazom płaci obietnicą
Nieziemskiej miłości, wiecznego przepychu.
Każdy zaś nakazy wypełnia jak umie
I wierzy, że wierząc - nie musi rozumieć
Czemu krew przelewa i popioły wdycha.
Więc ów, kogo wiar tych oferta nie ruszy -
Czyż nie ma duszy?

Rhetorical Questions

So many words invite me to trust them;
They slash with wit or explode with passion,
They will lift me up to Heaven, or crash me to the ground.
But to trust - means to lift up the visor
Before someone who may be wrong, or wish me harm.
So you expose to a blow what’s most delicate.
Though – if it’s no longer possible to trust words -
What remains?

Thus we believe in love, when it appears,
It will saturate life with dreams and save us from reality,
It will give motion to stillness with a sublime disquiet.
But to love – means to fuse with a mirror
Which will eventually vanish and leave emptiness,
Which will not be filled by any night shared for two.
Though - if I can no longer believe in love -
What do I understand?

We count on ourselves, to have the strength,
To traverse the excess of the world on our own,
And have enough from it to lift ourselves up.
Yet often the ground will collapse from under our feet
And you will not be able to lift yourself up
Willingly bowing your head before your powerlessness.
Though - if you can no longer count on yourself -
Are you nothing?

So many faiths for those who do not count on themselves
Submissiveness to orders is rewarded with a promise
Of celestial love, eternal splendor.
And everyone fulfills the orders as best they can
And believes that by believing – they do not have to understand
Why they spill blood and inhale ashes.
So those whom this offer of faith does not move -
Do they not have a soul?
