A költő üzenete

A fák elszórják magvaik,
Így adják tovább titkaik.
Én is, mint vén, hatalmas tölgy,
Őrködöm a sarjadók fölött.
Két kezem az ég felé tárom,
Őseim áldását várom,
Erő, hűség, remény, hitem,
Nem tántorít el semmi sem.

Ha más nyelvén kell, szóljak,
Nem lesz, mit daloljak,
Ha más nyelvén kell írnom,
Eltépem papírom,
Ha más nyelvén kell, éljek,
Pusztuljak el végleg,
Ha más nyelvén kell hinnem,
Verjen meg az Isten!

Törvényekkel nem tilthatják,
Magyar nyelvem ékes hangját,
Ragaszkodom minden szóhoz,
Minden igaz gondolathoz.
Amikor véget ér utam,
S a földdel eggyé olvadtam,
Véssétek rá keresztemre, hogy
"Versben él tovább lelke!"

The Poet's Message

Trees scatter their seeds,
Thus do they pass on their secrets.
I too, like an aged, mighty oak,
Watch over the saplings.
I spread my two hands towards the sky,
I await the blessing of my ancestors,
Strength, loyalty, hope, my faith,
Nothing can deter me.

If I must speak in another tongue,
I shall have nothing to sing about,
If I must write in another tongue,
I shall tear up my paper,
If I must live in another tongue,
May I perish outright,
If I must believe in another tongue,
May God strike me down!

No laws can forbid
The sweet melodies of my Hungarian tongue,
I cling to every word,
Every honest thought.
When my journey comes to an end,
And I become one with the earth,
Etch upon my cross that
"My soul lives on in verse!"
