Legenda

Egy szegény, szú ette, zsúp fedelű házban
Hó-hullató, titkos, téli éjszakában
Ült egy sápadt asszony, álmodozó szemmel
Az ujja közt orsó, a guzsalyán kender
Mint két rózsabimbó, az öreg nő mellett
Úgy játszik előtte két viruló gyermek
Kedvderítő vendég nem járja a házat
Két látogatója a gond meg a bánat
Mégis mikor leszáll a csillagos este
Gyermekek szoknyáját húzkodják esengve
Szívük a Szent Anna-tó partján barangol
Mondjon mesét, kérjük, édesanyánk arról
Szegény asszony szeme belevész az éjbe
Perdül a rokkája, suhan a meséje
Fehér gyopár szegte nagy hegyek tetején
Élt két irigy testvér, bús váruk rejtekén
Egy idegen úrnak arra vitt az útja
Szín-arany hintóját hat paripa húzta
Az egyik testvérhez betért vendégségbe
Aki a hintóra szemét rávetette
Hét falut is ígért, de sehogy sem kapta
Elő még egy hordó, verjük azt is csapra
Hanem akkor játszunk, döntsenek a kockák
S így nyerte el tőle aranyos hintóját
Reggeli napfénynél testvéréhez hajtott
Kiből az irigység e szókat hallatott:
Megmutatom majd én néked holnap reggel
Mikor fényes hintóm szép álmodból felver
Drága ékkövekkel színültig rakatta
Tizenkét szűz leányt elébe fogatta
Húzzák a leányok, majd belé szakadnak
De csak nem mozdul az semmilyen parancsnak
Végig csap az ostor egy Anna nevű lányon
Nem egyszer, nem kétszer, ki tudja vagy hányszor
Tűrt amíg tűrhetett jámbor nép módjára
Míg nagy keservében szóra nyílt a szája
Nyeljen el a föld hát mindünket itt nyomban
Ekkor már szemében különös láng lobban
Átkozza azt is, ki világra hozta őt
Láss csodát, nyílt a hegy és a vár összedőlt
Maga alá gyűrt az embert, kincset, házat
S helyében csillogó, víztükrű tó támadt
Ezüst csíkban porzik a víznek smaragdja
Hol tizenkét hattyú úszik ki a partra
Mind a tizenkettő szép lánnyá változik
Csak az Anna marad s holtig imádkozik

Legend

In a poor, worm-eaten, thatched house
On a snow-falling, secret, winter night
Sat a pale woman, with dreaming eyes
A spindle between her fingers, hemp on her spinning wheel
Like two rosebuds, next to the old woman
Two thriving children play in front of her
No cheerful guest visits the house
Two visitors are worry and sorrow
Yet when the starry night descends
The children beg their mother's skirt
Their hearts wander on the shores of Lake Saint Anne
Tell us a story, dear mother, about it
The poor woman's eyes get lost in the night
Her spinning wheel turns, her tale flies
White gypsophila lined the great mountain's top
Two envious brothers lived in their sad castle's hidden place
A foreign lord's journey led him there
Six horses pulled his golden carriage
He entered one of the brothers' homes as a guest
Who cast his eyes on the carriage
He promised seven villages, but didn't get it
Another barrel, let's tap it too
But then we'll play, let the dice decide
Thus, he won the golden carriage from him
At break of dawn, he drove to his brother
Who spoke these words out of envy:
I'll show you tomorrow morning
When my shiny carriage wakes you from your beautiful dream
He had it filled to the brim with precious gems
He harnessed twelve virgin girls in front of it
The girls pull, they will burst
But it doesn't move, no matter the command
The whip strikes a girl named Anna
Not once, not twice, who knows how many times
She suffered as long as she could, in the manner of a devout people
Until her great misery opened her mouth
May the earth swallow us all here at once
A strange flame flickers in her eyes
She curses the one who brought him into the world
Behold the miracle, the mountain opened and the castle collapsed
Burying people, treasure, and house beneath it
And in its place, a gleaming, watery lake arose
The water's emerald sparkles in a silver stripe
Where twelve swans swim to the shore
All twelve transform into beautiful girls
Only Anna remains and prays until death
