Amidst the flows of violent winds and storm clouds in black skies,
I was swept away by a wave thirty meters high,
Then pulled down to the depths, thirty feet below,
I saw death beside me, with eyes of white as snow.
But in the fury of the waters, I managed to emerge,
Among the planks shattered by the storms, man,
Clinging to a spice crate, I refused to give in,
And drifted on a lifeboat for months on end.
The sun inflicted more bites than thirst upon my wretched form,
And the teeth of barracudas,
Tattooed my bare skin with foam,
I, with salt in my wounds, under the moon's pale light.
In the ninth week, I saw a distant bay,
Seagulls gliding between clouds and a roadstead,
That brought me safely to the light sand,
On an island lost in some atoll around Asia?

I serenely watched this paradise of sea and sky,
Dense with gorgonians, enriched by colonies of black coral;
But suddenly, a wave hit my face and I woke up abruptly,
I was a half-dead castaway again,
And as the heat scorched my limp body,
No land in sight: all blue below, only blue all around.
