Dopo un inverno eterno, immerso da un pezzo nel riflesso immenso e terso dell'oceano,
Tornava allora nell'ora del cielo viola d'aurora
Dopo un inverno denso trascorso dentro la noia d'oro d'Europa.
Solo allora planando dai piani alti tra i raggi caldi,
Tra i canti degli altri scorgeva i suoi caldi e cari caraibi,
Vide le fronde dei manghi, le foglie dei mandorli,
Le onde del porto infrangersi di colpo sulle frotte dei granchi bianchi.
Aveva l'occhio dei grandi falchi e planando guardava
Mentre la piana esalava l'aroma dolce delle guayabas,
Nessun'altra spiaggia chiara chiamava una altrettanta alba,
Niente equiparava il panorama della plaza tra le luci della baia.
In quel momento il cielo era argento e smalto, intenso e caldo
Poi magenta e arancio e in fondo solo un accento di bianco
E lui contento e stanco ma ancora attento e scaltro
Trovava il compenso dei sui viaggi nei villaggi di menta e calicanto.
Ricalibrando vista e udito rivide il suo nido,
Si rivide più piccolo nello stesso sito da cui era partito
Poi si appoggiava stranito ad un cippo in granito sbiadito,
Fradicio in ogni piuma di spuma di salnitro.
Forse su, su nel vuoto l'aria sembra la stessa,
Ma qui giù, sopra il suolo, qui la terra si è persa,
C'è una terra diversa,
C'è una, c'è una... poi, poi, poi...
Ma qualcosa differiva e non era nel clima,
Qualcosa non capiva rispetto alla prima stima,
Lui cercava la vita, la città attiva, la città antica ma
Trovò solo una corte e lì la morte regina,
Tra le case, le piane e i palazzi in rovina,
Guardò il viale per la cattedrale, le strade per la capitale,
Le stanze delle varie case, stalle, aie, scale,
Tra le gabbie di iguane, in ogni nave per la Martinica;
Cercò la vita e trovò l'isla deserta,
Più a sud, più a sud sempre l'isla deserta:
Solo corpi riversi sotto a posti diversi, divelti,
L'odore di camelie soffocato della fogna aperta.
Questa sua terra di uomini fieri,
Resistente per millenni a bucanieri ed inglesi, si chiese:
"Quale male può portare tanto morte per tutto?
Quale male sa contare e spinge il carro al crepuscolo?"
Vide i lutti tra la tende di juta,
Pensò fosse il colera a riempire ogni buca,
Uno strano colera: variante più arguta
Che colpiva alla schiena
Con un colpo di grazia alla nuca
Forse su, su nel vuoto l'aria sembra la stessa,
Ma qui giù, sopra il suolo, qui la terra si è persa,
C'è una terra diversa,
C'è una, c'è una... poi, poi, poi...
L'albatros, sì, cominciava a capire,
Non gli rimase che patire e partire,
Il vento tossiva lui pensava che in fine
Peggior male di una terra è la sua guerra civile

The Albatross Returned
