This is a song written about growing up, I think
I always loved this
You see, the dreams that I had back in the East now
Are the time of broken hope when we should accept
Whatever's passed us by and never will return
Looking back to the beginning, I see a flood
Of painful memories and the bitter hurt
That we defy that comes without a beat
We set out with our heads held high
Sure of our ground, our righteousness
Well, the new Jerusalem to be built
Upon the cross of truth
But in the end we surrender easily
To stories pretending otherwise
While most of us add our little clues
Enough to break our nerves
While some of us made an easy peace
We moved into the brave new world
It's hard for the true believers to look back now
And realize that for many it's a clown
It was youth, the passion, the cause and the moment
Well, we ain't pretty, but you know
You can look pretty dumb standing in last year's clothes
And some of us, shell-shocked still
We run for shelter into the riches
The same old way of pretending that
Someone out there cares
And some of us live in the modern world
We give up to seize on what is due
And harbour the bitterness of defeat
And daydreams of revenge
But now if anything you see out there is real
It matters not what you believe in
It matters less what you say
But only what you are
It matters what you are
It matters what you are
It matters what you are
