Die Eisenbahnballade

Ein dichter Nebel senkte sich auf die große, fremde Stadt
Ein langer Arbeitstag lag hinter mir, ich war abgespannt und matt
Zu müde für die Autobahn, zu spät für den letzten Flug
Doch ich wollte nach Haus
Und da fand ich heraus
Gegen Mitternacht ging noch ein Zug

Es blieb noch etwas Zeit, ich wußte nicht wohin, so stand ich am Bahnhof herum
Einem Prunkbau aus längst vergangener Zeit, Drängeln, Suchen und Schieben ringsum
Ich sah die Reisenden, die Wartenden und die Gestrandeten der Nacht
So viel Gleichgültigkeit
So viel Jammer und Leid
Unter so viel kalter Pracht
Ich trat auf den offenen Bahnsteig hinaus, die naßkalte Luft hielt mich wach
Ich fröstelte, schlug meinen Kragen hoch und sah meinem Atem nach
Aus der Dunkelheit schwebten überm Gleis drei Lichter, mein Zug fuhr ein
Eine Wagentür schlug
Es war warm in dem Zug
Und ich war im Abteil ganz allein
Lautlos fuhren wir an, und die Lichter der Stadt versanken in milchigem Brei
Und immer schneller flogen erleuchtete Fenster und Vorstadtbahnhöfe vorbei
Noch ein Bahnübergang, ein paar Scheinwerfer, und die Welt da draußen verschwand
Mein Abteillicht fiel in weiß
Auf den Schotter am Gleis
Und ich ahnte das dunkle Land

Und durch die Dunkelheit drang
Der monotone Klang
Der Räder auf dem Schienenstrang
Ein einsamer Gesang
Den stählernen Weg entlang

Vorn an der Trasse standen sie, die Haut wettergegerbt
Mit ihren Spaten hatten sie Adern ins Land gekerbt
Mit Hacken und mit Hämmern hatten sie Berge bewegt
Und Schwellen über Schotter und darauf Schienen gelegt

In bittrem Frost, sengender Glut, in Regen, Tag für Tag
Nachts einen Strohsack auf dem Boden im Bretterverschlag
Und wieder auf beim Morgengrau'n für jämmerlichen Lohn
Und noch ein neues Vermögen mehr für den Stahlbaron

Und bald fauchte das Dampfroß funkensprühend durch das Land
Manch neue Industrie und manch Imperium entstand
Manch unschätzbarer Reichtum, doch an jedem Meter Gleis
Jeder Brücke, jedem Tunnel klebten Tränen, Blut und Schweiß
Die Eisenbahn trug Fortschritt, technische Revolution
In jedem Winkel, bis in die entlegenste Station
Trug Güter von den Seehäfen bis an den Alpenrand
Verband Menschen und Städte und trug Wohlstand in das Land
Doch der großen Erfindung haftet stets die Tragik an
Daß sie dem Frieden, aber auch dem Kriege dienen kann
Endlose Rüstungszüge rollten bald schon Tag und Nacht
Kriegsgerät und Kanonen war'n die vordringliche Fracht

Schon drängte sich auf Bahnhöfen siegesgewiß das Heer
Den Jubel auf den Lippen und mit Blumen am Gewehr
In fahnen- und siegesparol'n behangene Waggons
Nach Lemberg oder Lüttich, nach Krakau oder Mons

Im Trommelfeuer von Verdun erstarb der Siegeswahn
Aus Zügen wurden Lazaretts, und diesmal sah die Bahn
Den Rückzug der Geschlagenen und – den Kriegsherren zum Hohn –
Im Waggon im Wald von Compiègne, die Kapitulation
Millionen Tote auf den Schlachtfeldern, sinnloses Leid.
Wer heimkehrte, fand Elend, Not und Arbeitslosigkeit
Doch auf dem Boden des Zusammenbruchs gediehen schon
Die Schieber und die Kriegsgewinnler, die Spekulation

Aber es sproß auch aus den Wirr'n verstrickter Politik
Der zarte, schutzbedürft'ge Halm der ersten Republik
Doch Kleingeist, Dummheit und Gewalt zertrampelten ihn gleich
Mit Nagelstiefeln auf dem Weg ins Tausendjähr'ge Reich

Die Unmenschen regierten, und die Welt sah zu und schwieg
Und wieder hieß es: "Räder müssen rollen für den Sieg!"
Und es begann das dunkelste Kapitel der Nation
Das dunkelste des Flügelrades: Die Deportation

In Güterwaggons eingeschlossen, eingepfercht wie Vieh
Verhungert und verzweifelt, nackt und frierend standen sie
Hilflose Frau'n und Männer, Greise und Kinder sogar
Auf der bittren Reise, deren Ziel das Todeslager war

Dann aber brach der Zorn der Gedemütigten herein
Kein Dorf blieb da verschont, da blieb kein Stein auf einem Stein
Und Bomben fielen, bis das ganze Land in Flammen stand
Die Städte ausradiert war'n und der Erdboden verbrannt
Der Krieg war mörderischer als jemals ein Krieg zuvor
Und schwer gestraft das Volk, das ihn frevelnd heraufbeschwor
In Trümmern und Ruinen strichen sie hungernd umher
Die Überlebenden, die Ausgebombten, nichts ging mehr

Und immer längere Flüchtlingstrecks kamen Tag für Tag
Und irrten durch ein Land, das unter Schutt und Asche lag
Der Überlebenswille zwang sie, nicht zu resignier'n
Die Aussichtslosigkeit, das Unmögliche zu probier'n

Noch aufzuspringen, wenn irgendwo ein Hamsterzug ging
Wenn an den Waggontür'n schon eine Menschentraube hing
Ein Platz auf einem Puffer, einem Trittbrett bestenfalls
Mit Hoffnung auf ein bißchen Mehl, Kartoffeln oder Schmalz

Was auf dem Bahndamm lag, wurde von Kindern aufgeklaubt
Und manch ehrlicher Mann hat manchen Kohlenzug beraubt
Und dann kamen die Züge mit den Heimkehrern besetzt
Verwundet und zerschunden, abgerissen, abgewetzt

Wie viele Dramen spielten sich auf den Bahnsteigen ab!
Suchen und Freudentränen, wo's ein Wiedersehen gab
Warten, Hoffen und Fragen, wird er diesmal dabei sein?
Viele kamen vergebens, und viele gingen allein

Zerschoss'ne Loks und Wagen wurden recht und schlecht geflickt
Und auf ein abenteuerliches Schienennetz geschickt
Und der Puls begann zu schlagen, und aus dem Nichts entstand
Mit Hoffnungen und Träumen beladen, ein neues Land
Und durch das Morgengrau'n drang
Der monotone Klang
Der Räder auf dem Schienenstrang
Ein schwermütiger Gesang
Den stählernen Weg entlang
Das Rattern der Räder über eine Weiche rief mich in die Gegenwart
Übernächtigt war ich aufgewacht, ich war fast am Ziel meiner Fahrt
Ich rieb mir die Augen und räkelte mich, das Neonlicht schien fahl
Und im leeren Raum
Zwischen Wachen und Traum
Sah ich sie noch einmal

Der Adler, der Fliegende Hamburger, die Preußische P 8
Und die sagenumwobene O5 fauchten vor mir durch die Nacht
Ein Gegenzug auf dem Nachbargleis riß mich aus den Träumen heraus
Ein Blick auf die Uhr
Zehn Minuten nur
Und zum Frühstück wär' ich zu Haus

Draußen konnt' ich für Augenblicke in erleuchtete Fenster sehn
Sah die Menschen auf dem Weg zur Arbeit auf den Vorstadtbahnhöfen steh'n
Sah die Scheinwerfer der Autos vor den Schranken am Bahnübergang
Und eine Hoffnung lag
Über dem neuen Tag
Und in dem Sonnenaufgang

The Railway Ballad

A thick fog descended upon the vast, unfamiliar town
A long day's work lay behind me, I was weary and worn down
Too tired for the highway, too late for the last flight
But I longed to go home
And then I found out
There was still a train leaving near midnight

There was some time left, I didn't know where to go, so I wandered around the station
A magnificent building from a bygone era, bustling, searching, and shoving all around
I saw the travelers, the waiting ones, and the stranded souls of the night
So much indifference
So much misery and plight
Beneath such cold grandeur and light
I stepped out onto the open platform, the damp and cold air kept me awake
I shivered, turned up my collar, and watched my breath take shape
From the darkness, three lights hovered above the tracks, my train pulled in
A carriage door slammed shut
It was warm inside the train
And I was all alone in the compartment
We started silently, and the city lights faded into a milky haze
And ever faster, illuminated windows and suburban stations flew by
One more crossing, a few headlights, and the world outside disappeared
My compartment light fell in white
On the gravel by the track's side
And I sensed the dark countryside

And through the darkness there came
The monotonous sound
Of the wheels on the iron strand
A lonely song
Along the steel-forged land

There they stood at the front of the line, their skin weathered by time
With their spades, they had carved veins into the land's design
With picks and hammers, they had moved mountains with might
And laid down ties over gravel, and rails upon them, so bright

In bitter frost, scorching heat, in rain, day by day
At night, a straw sack on the floor in a wooden shack, where they lay
And up again at dawn's first light, for a pitiful pay
And yet another fortune for the steel baron, come what may

And soon the steam horse roared, sparks flying through the land
Many a new industry and empire came to stand
So much invaluable wealth, yet on every meter of track
Every bridge, every tunnel, tears, blood, and sweat did stack
The railway brought progress, a technical revolution's birth
To every corner, reaching the most remote station on Earth
Carried goods from the seaports to the Alps' majestic side
Connected people and cities, and brought prosperity far and wide
Yet, with great inventions, tragedy always intertwines
For they can serve peace, but also war's cruel designs
Endless trains of armaments soon rolled both day and night
Weapons and cannons became the priority freight in sight

The army, confident of victory, crowded the stations' embrace
With cheers on their lips and flowers adorning their guns' grace
Wagons draped in flags and victory slogans bold
To Lemberg or Liège, to Krakow or Mons, stories yet untold

In the drumfire of Verdun, the delusion of victory died
Trains became hospitals, and this time the railway spied
The retreat of the defeated, and – mocking the warlords' pride –
In the wagon in the forest of Compiègne, surrender did reside
Millions dead on the battlefields, pointless suffering's sting
Those who returned found misery, hardship, and unemployment's cling
Yet, from the ashes of collapse, they thrived and grew
The profiteers and war profiteers, speculation anew

But from the tangled web of politics, it also sprouted free
The delicate, vulnerable stalk of the first republic, you see
Yet pettiness, stupidity, and violence trampled it down
With hobnailed boots on the path to the Thousand-Year Reich's crown

The inhumane ruled, and the world watched and stayed quiet and tame
And once again, the cry arose: "Wheels must roll for victory's claim!"
And thus began the nation's darkest chapter, filled with despair
The darkest of the winged wheel: The deportation, beyond compare

Locked in freight cars, crammed like cattle, with no escape in sight
Starving and desperate, naked and freezing, they stood in the night
Helpless women and men, the elderly, and even children so small
On the bitter journey, their destination the death camp's call

Then the wrath of the humiliated came crashing down, it's true
No village was spared, no stone was left upon another, anew
And bombs fell until the whole land was engulfed in flames' embrace
Cities eradicated, the earth scorched, leaving no trace
The war was more murderous than any war ever before
And heavily punished the people who wickedly brought it to the door
In ruins and rubble, they wandered around, hunger their guide
The survivors, the bombed-out, nothing left to hide

And ever longer lines of refugees arrived day by day
And wandered through a land that lay under debris and ash, astray
The will to survive forced them not to resign or despair
To try the impossible, the hopeless, with a strength beyond compare

To jump on, when a hamster train went by, a chance to seize
When a crowd of people already clung to the carriage doors, if you please
A place on a buffer, a running board at best, a fleeting hold
With hope for a bit of flour, potatoes, or lard, a story to be told

What lay on the railway embankment, children picked up with care
And many an honest man robbed a coal train, beyond compare
And then came the trains filled with the homecoming men
Wounded and battered, torn and worn, their spirits thin

How many dramas unfolded on the platforms, tears did fall
Searching and tears of joy, where reunions did enthrall
Waiting, hoping, and asking, will he be there this time?
Many came in vain, and many left alone, a sorrowful chime

Shattered locomotives and wagons were patched up, as best they could
And sent out onto an adventurous rail network, understood
And the pulse began to beat, and out of nothingness arose
Laden with hopes and dreams, a new land, where life flows
And through the morning twilight came
The monotonous sound
Of the wheels on the iron strand
A melancholic song
Along the steel-forged land
The clatter of wheels over a switch jolted me back to the present day
Sleep-deprived, I had awakened, almost at my journey's end, I say
I rubbed my eyes and stretched, the neon light seemed pale and dim
And in the empty space
Between wakefulness and dream
I saw them once again, it seemed

The Eagle, the Flying Hamburger, the Prussian P 8's might
And the legendary O5 roared through the night
A train on the adjacent track tore me from my dreams' embrace
A glance at the clock
Ten minutes more, at this pace
And I'd be home for breakfast, with grace

Outside, for a few moments, I could see into lighted windows' gleam
Saw people on their way to work, standing on suburban platforms, it seemed
Saw the headlights of cars before the barriers at the crossing's hold
And a hope lay
Over the new day
And in the sunrise, a story to be told
