Der einz'ge Zufluchtort für alle Fälle
Jeder malt sein S.O.S. an die Wand

Die Alten steh'n mit steinernen Fassaden
Im Ausschrank hinter der Papierfabrik
Und aus der offnen Kneipentür zieh'n Schwaden
Von Dunst und gelbem Licht und ewig gestriger Musik

Da steh'n sie, um nicht allein zu versinken
Mancher, weil ihm das Leben zu schwer fällt
Und mancher, um es sich leichter zu trinken
In meinem Dorf am Ende der Welt

Ein rauher Alltag zeichnet die Gesichter
Und Haus- und Feld- und Untertagarbeit
Aber er setzt in ihre Augen Lichter
Von Wärme und echter Herzlichkeit

Sie sind es, die mich an diesen Ort binden
Sie machen einen noblen Platz daraus!
Heimat ist immer, wo wir Freunde finden

The whole world lay along the railway line

The familiar twilight sinks down
And fine, thin drizzle falls
On shimmering basalt There I am again
My grey village at the end of the world!

The young people stand at the bus stop
Still a meeting point, shelter from the rain
The only refuge for all cases
Everyone paints their S.O.S. on the wall

The old people stand with stony faces
In the bar behind the paper factory
And clouds of steam drift from the open pub door
Of fumes and yellow light and eternally yesterday's music

There they stand, so as not to sink alone
Some because life is too hard for them
And some to make it easier to drink
In my village at the end of the world

A harsh everyday life marks the faces
And house- and field- and underground work
But it puts lights in their eyes
Of warmth and genuine warmth

They are the ones who bind me to this place
They make a noble place out of it!
