Truly Wild

I was wrong of course
But I declared it loudly
This must be the greenest green
I have ever seen

A crumbling boardwalk
Led us gently
Into a tangle of lush abundance
With just enough unruly

So it was easy to believe
Out there, it was only
You and me
Until the carefully planned 4x4s
Landed us with a little too much force
Not 10 feet from where we started
In that sea of concrete, I was brokenhearted

We were warned, stay back
They have never been
Tamed
For generations, they've roamed this island with the Spanish Moss
And the Live Oak holding space

We listen, we wonder, we marvel, we wait
Glittering sun on their velvet faces
At any moment, they could run from this place

Where it was easy to believe
Even standing still, they felt the thrill of being free
Until they made their way through the sand to the shore
Where the tide rolled in with a little too much force
Over the waves I hear the chorus
A crowd of fools rush in and scares those horses
