Warmth

Underneath the covers, and
when I close my eyes,
my chest tightens all the more.

Once, you slept here through many mornings.
Once, I kept my feelings secret in this chest.

I can’t help but toss and turn,
and lie still.
The chill is unbearable, all the more pathetic.

The fresh sheets, which you always changed.
The Byron poetry collection by my desk, a gift from you.

The warmth I could embrace is gone now,
and only yesterday’s breeze remains.

If only I could start over,
I think,
but the words I let slip cannot be taken back.

I’ll give up my pride, and if I can be honest,
I realize I’m all alone in this room.
