Until we came to Motown when we changed our name to The Supremes

How old were you, Florence?

She was 14 and Mary and I were 13
That's right, seven years ago
A group by the name of The Temptations now, they
Were The Primes at that time and they wanted us
To be a sister group, and we were The Primettes
Well, when did The Primettes become The Supremes?
About, um, about four years ago
Four years
Four and a half years

I guess that's when we came to Motown, uh, about four years ago

Well, how'd you- And- ...
Pick the name Supremes?
I did not pick the name Supremes because at that time I said, "Oh
That sounds like a boys group," you know, Sup- Supremes, you know
But Florence picked the name and I love
It now and never change, you know
She could tell you how she picked it

That must have been a tough decision
From all the possible names, Florence
Yes, it was, and then again it wasn't
I was given a- ...

At the company, and, um, I picked Supremes because I
Liked the name and it was different instead of like
"Ettes", Primettes and, you know, everybody had that
It also meant the tops, which you girls have certainly become
Right

You must have traveled, I guess, hundreds of thousands
Of miles all over the world entertaining fans
What's your most unusual experience while on tour, Florence?
Mm
You remember the one in Germany?
No, no
I liked the one in the Dick Clark Tour very...
Both of 'em were ridiculous

Which one you like?
Um, the one in Hamburg, Germany

We were singing along with a tape and the
Tape broke and- In the middle of your song?
Yes

But we kept on going and the show went on

How do you get your note?
Well, in that case we were really nervous and we were trying
To be cute and n- no music, you know, so we just start- ...
Popping our fingers and continued to sing the song
Until we got to the end and, and the audience loved it
They really did
I'm sure they did
But, uh, when we're sitting around for rehearsal or like in
A Coke or a malt shop or something, whatever we're thinking
About, someone will start singing and we just harmonize
Well, what's on your mind now?

Well, I love, I just love to cook for boys
I like to do other things, but I think cooking is about the main one

Um, how do you decide on your wardrobe?
We all decide
We might be in London, Detroit, anywhere, and we see something
And if one of us or two of us like it, we buy it too
That's important if we can get our sizes too

Were in London last we saw Lena Horne's show and Eartha
Kitt's show and they're very, very good performers

We're going into bigger and better
Club work that's all over the country
