Der Heideknabe

Der Knabe träumt, man schicke ihn fort
Mit dreißig Talern zum Heideort
Er ward drum erschlagen am Wege
Und war doch nicht langsam und träge!

Noch liegt er im Angstschweiß, da rüttelt ihn
Sein Meister, und heißt ihm, sich anzuzieh′n
Und legt ihm das Geld auf die Decke
Und fragt ihn, warum er erschrecke!

"Meister, mein Meister, sie schlagen mich tot
Die Sonne, sie ist ja wie Blut so rot!"
"Das ist sie für dich nicht alleine
Drum schnell, sonst mach' ich dir Beine!!

"Ach Meister, mein Meister, ich gehe, ich geh′
Bring' meiner Frau Mutter das letzte Ade
Und sucht sie nach allen vier Winden
Am Weidenbaum bin ich zu finden!"

Hinaus aus der Stadt! Und da dehnt sie sich
Die Heide, nebelnd, gespenstiglich
Die Winde darüber sausend
"Ach, wär' hier ein Schritt, ein Schritt, wie tausend!"

Und alles so still, alles so stumm
Man sieht sich umsonst nach Lebendigem um
Nur hungrige Vögel, die schießen
Aus Winden, um Würmer zu spießen!

Er kommt ans einsame Hirtenhaus
Der alte Hirt schaut eben heraus
"Ach, gib deinen Knecht mir zur Seite
Dass er bis zum Dorf mich begleite!"

Der Hirt winkte dem Knecht, dem lahmen Knecht
Der schnitt sich eben den Stecken zurecht!
Jetzt trat er hervor - ach, wie graute
Dem Knaben, als er ihn schaute!

"Ach Meister, Herr Hirte, ach nein, ach nein
Es ist doch besser, ich geh′ allein!"
Schon kann er die Weide erblicken
Da klopft ihn der Knecht in den Rücken!

"Du hältst es nicht aus - du gehst zu geschwind!
Ei, eile mit Weile, du bist ja noch Kind
Komm, setz dich unter den Weidenbaum
Und dort erzähl mir den hässlichen Traum!"

Er fasst den Knaben wohl bei der Hand
Er leistet auch nimmermehr Widerstand
Die Blätter flüstern so schaurig
Das Wässerlein rieselt so traurig!

"Nun sprich! Du träumtest, es kam ein Mann
Ich war es! Sieh mich doch näher an!
Ich zog ein Messer - es war wie dies!
Ach ja, ich zog es und ich stieß
Durchsucht durch die Kühle
Was hilft es auch, dass ich dich quäle!"

Und fragt ihr, wie′s weiter gekommen sei
So fragt zwei Vögel, die saßen dabei
Der Rabe erzählt, was der Böse noch tat
Und auch, wie's der Henker gerochen hat
Die Taube erzählt, wie der Knabe
Geweint und gebetet - ahhh, ahhh, aahhh!

The Heath Lad

The boy dreams, let him be sent away
With thirty thalers to the heath town
He was therefore slain on the way
And yet he was not slow and sluggish!

He still lies in a sweat of fear, when his master shakes him
And tells him to get dressed
And puts the money on the blanket
And asks him why he is frightened!

"Master, my master, they beat me to death
The sun, it is as red as blood!"
"It's not just for you alone
So hurry, or I'll make your legs move!!

"Oh master, my master, I'm going, I'm going
Bring my dear mother the last farewell
And if she searches for me to all four winds
I can be found by the willow tree!"

Out of the city! And there it stretches
The heath, foggy, ghostly
The winds whistling over it
"Oh, if only one step here were like a thousand!"

And everything so still, everything so silent
One looks in vain for anything alive
Only hungry birds, they shoot
Out of the winds to spear worms!

He comes to the lonely shepherd's house
The old shepherd just looks out
"Oh, give me your servant by my side
So that he may accompany me to the village!"

The shepherd beckoned to the servant, the lame servant
He was just cutting his stick to size!
Now he stepped forward - oh, how the boy turned pale
When he looked at him!

"Oh master, Mr. Shepherd, oh no, oh no
It's better if I go alone!"
He can already see the willow tree
Then the servant taps him on the back!

"You can't stand it - you're going too fast!
Hey, take it easy, you're still a child
Come, sit under the willow tree
And there tell me the ugly dream!"

He takes the boy well by the hand
He no longer resists
The leaves whisper so eerily
The little stream trickles so sadly!

"Now speak! You dreamed a man came
It was me! Take a closer look at me!
I drew a knife - it was like this!
Oh yes, I drew it and I stabbed
Searched through the coolness
What good does it do to torment you!"

And if you ask how it went on
Ask two birds that were there
The raven tells what the evil one did
And also, how the hangman smelled it
The dove tells how the boy
Cried and prayed - ahhh, ahhh, aahhh!
