Jak ta łąka źgana nogą jako kułakami
Doskoczyła ich na słońcu Południca blada
I Świdrydze, i Midrydze, i tańcowi rada
Zaglądała im do oczu chciwie jak do żłobu
"Który w tańcu mnie wyhula, bom jedna dla obu?"
Porwali ją za dłoń jedna, porwali za drugą
"Musisz obu nam wystarczyć, skąpico - dziewczuro!"
Rozdwoili ją po równo, rozczepili żwawo
Na dwie dziewki, na siostrzane - na lewą i prawą
Więc Świdryga pląsał z prawą, a Midryga z lewą
Ten obcasem kurz zamiatał, a tamten cholewą
Tańcowali z nią do zdechu i aż do upaści
Aż umarła jednocześnie we dwojej postaci
W dwóch ją trumnach pochowali, ale w jednym grobie
Ale huczy ziemne echo, tańczą trumny obie
Aż się kręci z nimi razem śmierć w skocznych lamentach
Aż się wnętrznościami trzęsie przerażony cmentarz
Pomąciła im się w głowach wiedza ta pomglona
Gdzie jest prawa strona świata, a gdzie lewa strona?
W jakiej trumnie lewa dziewka, w jakiej prawa leży?
I która z nich i do kogo po śmierci należy?
Obłąkani nad przepaścią poklękali wzajem
I na klęczkach zatańczyli nad przepaści skrajem
Porażeni mrokiem trumien, jak dwa błędne wióry
W otchłań śmierci powpadali nogami do góry!

Swift and Midge

It's not horses galloping, their ears not twitching
'Tis but two drunken fools dancing, Swift and Midge
And it's not a threshing floor banging with flails
'Tis the meadow being raked, its hooves like nails
Noonday, the pale specter, found them beneath the sun
And with Swift and Midge and their dance, she had fun
She eyed them greedily, as if to a feeding trough
"Which of you shall dance me best, for I am one for both?"
One seized her by her left hand, the other by her right
"You must suffice for both of us, miserly wight!"
They split her in two halves, as nimbly as they could
Into two damsels, sisters twain, one left and one right
So Swift danced with the right, and Midge with the left
This one's heels raised dust, that one's boots did cleft
They danced with her till they dropped, to the point of collapse
Till she died simultaneously in both forms, alas
They buried her in two coffins, but in a single grave
But the earth still echoes with the sound of dancing hooves
And both coffins whirl and twirl in lively laments
While the terrified cemetery shudders and ferments
Their minds were muddled by this hazy revelation
Which is the world's right side, and which its left persuasion?
In which coffin lies the left maid, and in which the right?
And which of them belongs to whom, by day or by night?
Bewildered on the precipice, they knelt side by side
And danced upon their knees, their doom they could not hide
Struck by the darkness of the coffins, like two errant chips
They fell into the abyss of death, their heels skyward and lips!
