A Comparison of Countries

We met at a traveler's inn,
And became close as soon as we met,
Two men, drunk, comparing our countries.

I have the broad shoulders of a Satsuma falcon,
And I'm not one to back down,
So I pounded on the table and shouted, "Cheers!"

Fireworks on my back, Sakurajima in my eyes,
And the Sumida River flowing through my veins,
We laughed and joked, and I said,

I can drink shochu like water,
And I'm the strongest drinker you'll ever meet,
So I pounded on the table and laughed out loud.

The food was homemade and delicious,
And the proprietress was kind and gentle,
Two men, drunk, comparing our romances.

Satsuma is a paradise for men,
Where there are no tears of love,
And where even drinking is not excessive.

A woman's heart is like Sakurajima,
Changing color seven times a day,
But I laughed and said,

If men are strong,
Then we cannot be strong drinkers,
So I pounded on the table and retorted.
