I remember all those many years ago
As I walked along those lonely country roads
Sometimes it'd be long after dark
Trying to get back home
And I never liked to walk in the dark alone

And I remember how I'd jump at the nightly sounds
I'd turn expecting to see someone else around
It sounded just like a footstep
Echo as mine hit the ground
Then I could feel that someone
Was walking beside of me

So I quickened my pace
Trying to hurry to get back home
Now that I'm older I realize
I was never on that road alone

It seemed that Jesus was always there
Walking beside me
And though I was afraid
He calmed the fear that was deep inside me
And somehow I knew I'd be okay
Just by his presence he made me feel safe
Jesus made my fear of the night
Just seem to fade away

There was a time long ago
That I didn't know
Just where life was taking me too
All the anger I felt from the pain in my heart
Made me lash out at the one who was true
But as I walked on the shore
The quiet sound of the waves
Calmed the anger so that I might see
That there's always someone close beside us
I know that Jesus walked beside of me
