John Edmond - The Waterberg Warrior Lyrics

Lyrics The Waterberg Warrior - John Edmond

In the year of 1878 down on a Waterberg farm
Near a town they call Nylstroom the Waterberg warrior was born
His name was Phillipus Jacobus Pretorius and in his early teens
His daddy made him go across the Limpopo
Leading transport wagon teams
He saw blood and gore in the Matabele war in 1893
When that was done he took his gun and went to the Zambezi
Up and down that mighty river and up the Kafue
Hunter trader explorer adventurer was all he wanted to be
Oh yeah the Waterberg Warrior, out there on his own
Oh yeah the Waterberg Warrior just did not come home
Africa is big and wide, she called and he had to go
To take a trip upon a ship to see the Kilimanjaro snow
To farm and sail round Lake Victoria to jungles of the West
Against gorillas and cannibals and dangerous animals
The Warrior stood the test
They called him Mthando Batho which means friend of all
Every tribal sort from Pygmies short to Watutsis tall
He never knew that trouble would brew and came the first world war
He had to come back or he'd be stuck in German East Africa
Oh Yeah the Waterberg Warrior came home to enlist
To join the South African military the Warrior did insist
The war was spreading round the world even up the African coast
And the German cruiser called Konigsberg to the British was a curse
He thought they were crazy to put him in the navy
But the admiral called him in
Told him of the Konigsberg and her mortal sin
He said listen here Pretorius the swine sank the Pegasus
where now could she be
He said I think she's taken shelter
Up in the delta of the river Rujiji
Give me some time and I'll seek out the mines,
I know the channels well
I'll take you to where the cannons can fire their devastating shells
Oh yeah the Waterberg Warrior he was the perfect guide
They found their mark and the Konigsberg rolled over and she died
The Waterberg warrior soldiered on Askaris by his side
With Rhodesians, South Africans, Indians and Africans
They stopped the German tide
He got decorations and citations even from the British King
Hunter adventurer farmer Warrior he did most everything
Hunting was his first love but he was so humane
Came the second world war the Warrior he enlisted again
In the Waterberg in the year of 1945
That's the place and that's the time the Waterberg Warrior died
Oh yeah the Waterberg Warrior was buried in Nylstroom
Yes, Major Phillipus Jacobus Pretorius the Warrior went home
Oh yeah the Waterberg Warrior known by one and all
Oh yeah the Waterberg Warrior answered the sunset call
Oh yeah
