Pialo Castration

Raising dust, the lasso sings its song,
Whistling truths over the grazing herd.
The mixed breed resists, the loop is swung,
My trusty steed saddled, bridle secured.

Mate brewed at dawn, the day's work begun,
As light breaks, I'm out with the herd.
Deep in the field, I urge the cattle on,
To the corral they come, on this chilly morn.

A wild, nimble, dark-coated bull,
I set my loyal dog upon him.
Roping the herd amidst bellows and kicks,
Brave and bold, my dog works alongside me.

With faith in my arm and a sharpened blade,
The whip cracks loud above the wrangler's head.
He falls subdued in the corral's center,
Ready for the castrating peon's knife.

As evening falls, I take up my accordion,
A mournful tune echoes through the vastness.
Then I saddle a spirited mare,
And head to the corral for a throw of the lasso.

I raise my arm and cast the braided rope,
A zebu is caught, falling with a bellow.
In moments, he rises, castrated,
Shaking his horns, he trots away.

Cachaça in the gourd, memories gleam,
What I've done here will become legend.
The boss says, "Now write for me,"
A verse for the Itacorubi ranch."

The testicles sizzle in the ash-covered embers.
