So stay focused
Keep your mouth shut and it'll be
Good for the patient and more efficient for you
That brings me to Number Two
Look after yourself
Good care begins with you
Your mental your physical
Health is critical
Make sure you eat and drink
At the beginning of each shift
Because hunger and thirst can make it difficult to think
And if you do get a break
Take a few minutes deep breaths and meditate
Number three
Book all your annual leave
Far in advance
Don't leave it down to chance
Demand your rota as early as you can
If you're switching jobs
Try your best to forward plan
Fourth Rule is not taught in med school Check your pay cheques
Make sure you get what's owed to you
And keep every monthly pay stubb
Cos later on
You might need proof that your pension is fully paid up
Number five
Take your time writing your notes
It's even fine if you're inclined to write in quotes
A verbatim account of
What you were told
Clearly laying it out if
Drama unfolds
It's pretty rare but
Be prepared for litigation
So don't be scared
Stick to careful documentation
Those words you write
Might be read by a solicitor
Keep it airtight crystal clear and unambiguous
Number six is this
You're not a doctor to your kids
Or spouse or friends
Or other distant relatives
This rule is GMC mandated
Your family and job are
Completely seperated
So don't advise or prescribe for them or yourself
They've got their own doctor
So keep it proper
Number seven
Even when you've got a lot to do
Prescribe with care in
Community or hospital
Your signature's there then
That means that you're responsible
For what the patient takes
Check it twice ensure it's safe
Number eight
Of course you'll make mistakes
But learn from them and of course communicate
Duty of candour an underrated premise
Tell the truth
Don't try to cover up a blemish
Number nine should have been
Number one to me
You are not defined by
Your medical degree
Take time to maintain outside interests
You could write rhymes and make beats
For instance
Whatever floats your boat
As long as it's legal
Work self and non work self

Constant flow of new medicines
