Ich friste in einem Loch unterm Dach
Als armer Hund mein Dasein
Hab′ wenig zu essen, drum lieg' ich oft wach

Des Nachts im Suff zerschlagen

Einen Streit mit ihm darf ich nicht wagen!
Ich geb ihm den Schein, und ist′s auch mein letzter –

I drag out my existence in a hole under the roof
As a poor dog
Have little to eat, so I often lie awake
And starve with water and wine
And the bare wall stares at me too –
What does it matter, now there hangs
A picture of her –
She gave it to me!

My books, the last possessions
I'll take them to the pawnshop
There I'll sell them to the people
Who don't understand how to read anyway
Even if they don't give me much for them –
What does it matter, then I'll just read
The letters from her –
She sent them to me!

I think I once
Smashed my window at night while drunk
My landlord wants me to pay for the damage –
I must not dare to argue with him!
I'll give him the money, even if it's my last –
What does it matter, now there hangs
A coat from her –
She gave it to me!

Because her husband is old and mean
A Sunday hunter and a gentleman rider –

Than her heart –
