A Medieval Tale

Poverty plagues the attics and storerooms,
Gold hoards nature's surplus,
Only the rich live - or the sick,
And you can't tell which is which.
For from under their overflowing tables and empty troughs,
Rats emerge.
Those who are still alive despise these vermin,
Disgustedly lifting their feet,
Granting impunity to these tiny harbingers of misfortune,
Whose sole purpose is gruesome:
To seize the scraps, because in the scraps,
Rats multiply.
What if they devour each other relentlessly,
Seeking to tear their own brothers apart?
Nothing will remain for us from this battle,
Only calcified marble on damp shavings,
