Nad uroki śmiełowskiej dziedziny.
Gdzie dygoce Jarocin
Od rockowych wypocin,
Żerków w dawnej świetności się chowa -
Czy się zmierzcha, czy dnieje -
Śmiełów śmiało jaśnieje
Jak stracona w murawie podkowa.
Gdzie ten koń co ją stracił?
Gdzie ziemnianie bogaci,
Gdzie masońskie fartuszki i młotki?
Kustosz z żoną kustoszką
Namyślają się gorzko
Skąd na remont pałacu wziąć środki.
O, nie tak było drzewiej!
A jak było - nikt nie wie,
Bo nie wszystkie się jawia sekrety,
Kiedy chodzi o miłość,
Polityczną zawiłość
I poetę pod wpływem kobiety.
Tu wieszcz Adam dni szereg
Spędził w piekle rozterek;
Czy powstańcze zasilić ma jatki,
Czy - gdy żądza się perli
W romantycznej scenerii -
Wybrać raczej ramiona mężatki.
Tam reduty, potyczki,
Bem, Prądzyński, Chłopicki
Tam krwiożercze Moskali są rzesze;
Ona tu, niedaleczko,
Ot, przejażdzka na rzeczką -
Serce, drżyj! W Budziszewku włos czesze.
A spod grzywki niesfornej
Zerka oczko przekorne,
Kuszą wargi czerwieńsze od wina;
Jeszcze niżej - o nieba!
Wszystko jest co potrzeba
A do tego i mąż - poczciwina.
Trudny wybór. Nie dla niej;
Legło w gruzach powstanie
I legł wieszcz - pod najsłodszym ciężarów.
A wyrzuty sumienia
W patriotycznych skrył pieniach
Za co wdzięczny do dziś jest mu naród.
Wiele jeszcze przed wieszczem
I uniesień i nieszczęść:
Szlak do Turcji przez Prusy i Francję;
Wieszczył, grzeszył i święcił,
Lecz zachował w pamięci
Biały Śmiełów, srebrzystą Konstancję.
Ach, i ja tu uciekłem,
Gdy utarczki przewlekłe
Obalały gabinet Pawlaka,
Bu nie Sejm mieć za oknem,
Ale łąki podmokłe,
Lip gałęzie w jemiołach i ptakach.
Tam skandale i grandy,
Tam odchodzi Falandysz
Tam Namiestnik swój geniusz tłumaczy -
Tu najwyżej doleci
Z pegeeru naprzeciw
Woń gnojówki lub tęskny zew klaczy.

Kto ucieka od strapień

Wiatr gałęzią - kochanki paznokciem...
Lecz, jak gromić Adama,
Gdy rozterka ta sama
Zamiast w walce - wyżywa się w piosnkach?
Więc sumienie najszczersze
Dyktowało mi wiersze
Których temat: Pochwała Łotrostwa.

The Charms of Śmiełów

Many manors, estates,
Garden nooks so quaint,
Grace the plains of Wielkopolska's land;
But I dare to proclaim,
You'll find few that can claim
The beauty of Śmiełów's sweet command.
Where Jarocin does sway
To the rock songs of the day,
Żerków hides its past magnificence -
Whether dusk or dawn's embrace,
Śmiełów shines with radiant grace,
Like a horseshoe lost in the meadow's space.
Where's the steed that lost its shoe?
Where are landowners, wealthy and few,
With Masonic aprons and hammers held tight?
The curator and his wife,
Ponder with all their life,
How to find funds for the palace's plight.
Oh, it wasn't like this before!
But how it was, no one is sure,
For not all secrets are meant to be seen,
When love intertwines its art,
With political deceit's sharp dart,
And a poet under a woman's queenly heart.
Here, Adam, the bard of fame,
Spent many days in turmoil's flame;
Should he join the uprising's bloody fray,
Or - when desire takes its hold,
In a setting romantic and bold -
Choose the arms of a married woman, come what may.
Redoubts and skirmishes ignite,
Bem, Prądzyński, Chłopicki take flight,
The bloodthirsty Muscovites swarm like bees;
She is here, not far away,
Just a short ride by the river, they say -
Heart, tremble! In Budziszewko, she combs her hair with ease.
And from beneath her unruly fringe,
A playful eye starts to impinge,
Lips more tempting than wine's crimson hue;
Lower still - oh heavens above!
Everything needed for passionate love,
And on top of it all, a husband kind and true.
A difficult choice. Not for her to bear;
The uprising crumbles in despair,
And the bard succumbs - to the sweetest of burdens he'll share.
And the pangs of guilt he did feel,
He concealed in patriotic zeal,
For which the nation is grateful to this day, my dear.
Much more awaited the bard's embrace,
Both joys and sorrows he would face:
A path to Turkey, through Prussia and France he'd roam;
He prophesied, sinned, and he prayed,
But forever in his memory stayed,
White Śmiełów and Constance, like silver, his home.
Ah, I too sought refuge here,
When protracted battles drew near,
Toppling Pawlak's government with might,
Not the Sejm I wished to see,
But meadows damp and free,
Linden branches with mistletoe and birds in flight.
There, scandals and grandeur reside,
There, Falandysz steps aside,
There, the Viceroy explains his genius untold -
Here, at most, there might come,
From the state farm, overcoming the hum,
The scent of manure or a mare's longing, bold.
A scoundrel - who hides in Śmiełów's grace,
When the storms of history embrace,
Tearing the homeland apart at the seams!
Who escapes from suffering's hold,
Here, where at night, against the cold,
The wind scratches the door with a branch - like a lover's dreams...
But how can I condemn Adam's plight,
When the same dilemma takes flight,
Expressed not in battles, but in songs I write?
So my conscience, pure and true,
Dictated verses anew,
With a theme: In Praise of Rascality's light.
