Recém volvi lá da estância
Depois de banhar o gado
E esta tarde foi um forno
Com o sol do alto planchado
As bolheadeiras... E as talhas
Repinicando o alambrado

É esse o rastro do casco
Deste taura missioneiro
Cruzo inverno a cavalo
Por este pago campeiro
Em marchas e recolutas
Desta lida de posteiro

Apesar desses rigores
Conservo a alma serena
Se o meu poncho vara água
E as garras chegam dar pena
No meu rancho nunca falta
Cara alegre e jerva buena!!

Assoviando campereio
Naquele flete de estouro
Recorro bem o banhado
Por que é feio tirar um couro
E o patrão me disse ontem
Que inté um guacho vale ouro!

Às vezes me falta plata
Inté pra ver as morena
Faço de conta e não vejo
Sigo meu tranco torena
Guincho galpão... Tranço laço
Galopeio algum ventena!!

Enganchar um boi no laço
Num aparte em tempo feio
Pra livrar um companheiro
De algum gavião sem costeio
É um mandamento pampeano
Que aprendi no pastoreio...

O patrão me deu um pingo
Um dos tanto que ele tem
Um primor de bom de rédea
De patas solto tambem
Mas que amanhece aluado
E não carrega ninguém

Já sovei-lhe o couro a mango
Risquei ele com as soronas
Não encilho mais o tufo
Nem com festas e cordeonas
Me rebentou um serigote
E estraviou duas caronas!

Me falta força e tutano
Pra seguir nessa labuta
Tenho o corpo mais pesado
E a coragem menos bruta
Pois só mágoas campereio
Com penas de recoluta!

E me vou deixando o rastro
Na invernada e no potreiro
Tudo que fiz nesta vida
Com garoa e com pampeiro
Hoje... são simples memórias
Do meu recuerdo posteiro!!

Posthumous Memory

I recently returned there from the ranch
After bathing the cattle
And this afternoon it was a furnace
With the high sun shining down
The kneaders... And the vats
Ringing the wire fence

That's the trail of the hoof
Of this missionary bull
I cross winter on horseback
Through this countryside
In marches and roundups
Of this work of a gatekeeper

Despite these rigors
I keep my soul serene
If my poncho gets wet
And my hands get chapped
In my hut there's always
A cheerful face and good weed!!

Whistling, I ride
On that tough horse
I go through the marsh
Because it's ugly to take a hide
And the boss told me yesterday
That even a gaucho is worth gold!

Sometimes I don't have any money
Not even to see the dark-haired girls
I pretend I don't see them
I keep on going
I hang out in the shack... I braid a lasso
I gallop for a while!!

To hook a steer with a lasso
In a roundup in bad weather
To free a compañero
From some hawk with no ribs
Is a Pampa commandment
That I learned in shepherding...

The boss gave me a horse
One of the many he has
A beauty, good with the reins
With loose legs too
But it gets crazy at dawn
And doesn't carry anyone

I've already tanned its hide
I've scratched it with the spurs
I don't saddle the tuft anymore
Not even with parties and accordions
It busted my skull
And lost two saddle blankets!

I lack the strength and stamina
To continue this work
My body is heavier
And my courage less raw
Because I only ride with sorrows
With the pains of a roundup!

And I'm leaving my trail
In the winter pasture and in the corral
Everything I did in this life
With drizzle and with wind
Today... are simple memories
Of my posthumous recollection!!
