The Six Fingered Hand

I remember when I was a kid, the past century seemed special
All the decades were lined up just like a set of coloured pencils
The '50s, the '60s, the '70s, oh, they all looked so exotic
I was certain the years yet to come would be just as iconic
Now they've been and gone
What the hell went wrong?

Where were all the amazing designs, fashions and movements and signs of the times?
Looking at pictures of 2001 makes it feel like we got nothing done
We're all afraid, dried up and useless
The six-fingered hand crushes our throats
Our throats

If you kidnapped a man from the '90s and brought him back to the present day
He'd probably die from the sheer disappointment
'Cause everything looks exactly the same
Brain-dead! Wasted!

I always dreamt of a musical happening
Like the punk bands, two-tone, one of these
The only movement that I got caught up in was from CDs to Mp3s
What a rip-off

Did we all have our ambition scared out of us, or is it just
That if all the stars are competition winners with fake tans and sob stories
Why bother building rockets?
We didn't even try, we didn't even try

They had The Beatles, we had the Coldplay sound
They had the Pythons, we had The IT crowd
Burnt out and all for jack
I want my '20s back
