Somewhere On The Wind (Commentary)

Man, I have had so much fun talking to the guys from Midland. We
Are celebrating their debut album "On the Rocks" and its release
It's available now, and we're gonna talk about the last song on the
Album, "Somewhere on the Wind," but I do want to ask you first

Your harmonies are so freaking good. Do you remember the first time
That the three of you got together and sort of attempted harmony and
Just nailed it, and you thought, "Holy crap, we've got something."

I don't remember the fr- I definitely remember a time where we were

Going to the rehearsal space every single day, seven days a week

And this wasn't the first time that we had done this in our lives

Going to a rehearsal space seven days a week and playing forever

But I do remember in Texas we were going, and just the three of us

Around one guitar and a piano and going through our songs and going

Note for note, word for word, phrase by phrase, figuring out whose

Parts were gonna be what, and feeling a real sense of accomplishment
Once we had gotten through the songs and gone and figured out what
Our harmonies are gonna be, and someone said that, I think it was
Such a high compliment, someone said, and this is such a weird
Thing 'cause I realize you have to be in a vocal group to really
Think this is like the most golden compliment someone could give
You, but a person said that you guys have, it sounds like you guys
Share DNA, the way that you guys sing together, like your voices
Blend, like you're brothers, and I- I honestly probably hold that as
The highest compliment that anyone's ever given us, period. Me as-

Yeah, I mean, your harmonies are amazing

Thank you. We- we work hard on them and we hold that part
Of our live show and our recordings in the highest regard

Well, and then I do want to talk about the last track, which

Is "Somewhere on the Wind." I mean, to me, it's about answering

That irresistible call of the road. Do you guys feel that? I-
I know that sometimes, I mean, you can get road-weary and
You're so glad to be home, but then when you're home for a little
While, I mean, can you just not wait to get back out there?
It always pulls you back
Yeah, I mean, you, yeah, just like, it just always seems to be kind
Of the nature of mankind, like, you always kind of want what you
Don't have, but for somebody that's never been on the road or been
A rambling man and that, there is something magical about it, man
You're meeting new people all the time, you're seeing new things and-

Wait, you're not a rambling man?

What's that?

Did you say you were not?

No, I'm saying, if you're not, if you're
A listener and you're not out there

For people who are and don't understand that life

And I think that's also been the- the lure and the- the appeal
To guys like, you know, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams

Train hobos
That have written some of the great, kind
Of, yeah, rambling man songs, you know?

Hopping on a train and

I've actually heard a story about Willie Nelson that, at times
He will actually sleep on the tour bus parked outside of his house
Because he's always ready to go and he sleeps better on the bus

Well, you sleep, and there's something about, you know, there's white

Noise and the hum of the diesel engine and the gentle, well

Hopefully it's gentle, the- the- usually we're running late and our

Driver's doing 85 and you're doing turns, one of our- our steel-

Our steel guitars fell, or, well, our- our, I mean, people fall out

Of the bunks all the time, sometimes the drivers take turns, but

Um, yeah, there's something, you know, it's- it's in your, talking

About DNA, like, it's- it's- it's in your blood, man, like, I knew

It when I was a kid, I knew that, I knew I wasn't gonna go get a 9

To 5 job, I always used to watch the sunset behind the Santa Rita

Mountains and wondered what the hell was on the other side of those

Hills, and ever since I was a kid, I had a fascination to go and see
The world, and maybe that started with our- us doing our family
Vacations and- and throwing all the cattle and the trucks and the
Trailers and driving from Arizona to, you name the destination, but
We crossed the entire country every summer for two and a half weeks
And I fell in love with the road. We had a CB radio and- and my dad
Taught us how to talk to the truckers, and yeah, man, like, there's
A reason there's so many songs around, it's- it's- it's like a drug
You know, it- there- it's a high, but it can be dangerous too, I mean
, Life on the road is- is, it ain't easy, it's a hazardous place, man

Oh, I couldn't do it

I had that same experience growing up, like, in a small town
It was just nowhere, like, just not, barely even on the map, but
You know, you pick up radio stations, and I remember I listened
To this, like, countdown, pop radio countdown, just, like
Listening to these songs and going, like, "I wonder what life is
Like, like, where these people are," you know, it must be so crazy
