The text is an adaptation of a Latin prologue to a treatise by Bishop Patrick (d. 1084), who, during the last 10 years of his life, ruled the Hiberno-Norse city of Dublin. The bombarde is a traditional Breton instrument, often likened to the oboe though in some respects it is rather like the chanter of the Scottish bagpipes, mouth-blown. This variation on 'The Pilgrim' song theme employs the full range of the instrument which is extremely difficult to play in its upper register.
