We're so happy today to have Thomas Rhett joining us in the studio
For his "Life Changes" album release special
Getting his take on all the songs on the album, we're also playing all the songs
And this next one is called "Gateway Love"
There are a few songs on this album that have a nostalgic feel to them, uh
Like smooth, like the summer renegades, and this is another one
And to me this almost has sort of like if Sade and Maroon 5 got together
For a song about summer romance (yeah)
You'd end up with "Gateway Love" so talk to me about this song

This song was written at 2:00 in the morning in Charleston, South Carolina on a writer's retreat
And we had been doing nothing but writing for four days
Everybody's brains are just French toast (sure)
We can't make words around with each other anymore
But I remember my buddy Sean Douglas who was a cowriter on "Die a Happy Man" in vacation
Got up on the piano, and it was me and this girl named Emily Weisband
And a guy named Sam Ellis
And we're all just sitting in the living room everybody I think had gone to bed and, uh

Sean started playing this
And Sam goes
Like that super Latin beat
Yeah and um, Sean had the title called "Gateway Love" and when he said it
It was probably because it was late, and my mind was already exhausted
I was like, "That's amazing" uhm, 'cause of gateway drug but not gateway drug, gateway love
You totally got it as soon as he said it
Yeah, it just, like we have to write it right now, um, and it was just all about, gosh

I can remember being in seventh grade just falling for the most attractive girl in my grade
And she liked me for two days and then dropped me for someone who was much
Bigger, stronger and cooler than I was
And I think we've all been in that scenario
Where we've been a stepping stone for somebody to get to the next step of where they wanna go
That's just kinda like my chill, Latin infused, dance, country song which makes zero sense

I-I love it, I thought it felt good, I was, yeah, grooving to it

On est tellement heureux d'avoir Thomas Rhett qui nous rejoint en studio aujourd'hui

Il y a quelques chansons sur cet album qui ont une ambiance nostalgique, euh
Comme douce, comme les "Summer Renegades", et celle-ci en est une autre
Et pour moi, ça ressemble presque à ce qui se passerait si Sade et Maroon 5 se réunissaient

Cette chanson a été écrite à 2h00 du matin à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud, lors d'une retraite d'écriture
Et on n'avait rien fait d'autre qu'écrire pendant quatre jours
Les cerveaux de tout le monde sont juste des toasts français (bien sûr)
On ne peut plus faire de mots ensemble
Mais je me souviens de mon pote Sean Douglas qui était co-auteur de "Die a Happy Man" en vacances

Et on était tous assis dans le salon, je pense que tout le monde était allé se coucher, et euh

Sean a commencé à jouer ça
Et Sam a dit

Ouais, et euh, Sean avait le titre "Gateway Love" et quand il l'a dit
C'est probablement parce que c'était tard et que mon esprit était déjà épuisé
J'ai dit : "C'est incroyable", euh, à cause de la drogue d'entrée, mais pas de la drogue d'entrée, de l'amour d'entrée
Tu l'as tout de suite compris dès qu'il l'a dit
Ouais, c'est juste, comme on doit l'écrire maintenant, euh, et c'était juste tout au sujet, mon Dieu

Je me souviens être en septième année, à craquer pour la fille la plus attirante de ma classe
Et elle m'a aimé pendant deux jours, puis elle m'a largué pour quelqu'un qui était beaucoup plus
Grand, fort et cool que moi
Et je pense qu'on a tous été dans ce scénario
Où on a été un tremplin pour que quelqu'un arrive à la prochaine étape de ce qu'il veut
C'est juste comme ma chanson country, chill, infusée de latin, qui danse, ce qui n'a aucun sens

J-j'adore, je trouvais que c'était bien, j'étais, ouais, en train de bouger dessus
