We're glad to have you listening to Big Machine Radio and
I think you're gonna be glad you're here because
We're talking to Thomas Rhett all about his new album, Life Changes
We're also playing all the songs off the album

And, the next song I wanna talk about is, uh, Leave Right Now (mm-hm)
Very Chainsmoker-sque and I say that (yeah)
Having just seen The Chainsmokers live (yeah) in concerts
Which I've never done (yeah), and it was mind boggling (yeah)
And and so, I wonder with a song like that, uhm
Did it start with a track and then (no)
Lead you to the idea, or how did that song originate?

It actually started very acoustic
(Really?) uhm, so like you know if you listen the verse first in the chorus
It's you know, it's really nothing but an acoustic guitar
And uh a little bit of synth but
We wrote the song without the drop first and it
(Wow) Really just, uhm, at the end of the chorus
It just kinda went to another verse and that was the song

But as the night went on
And as we, were just hangin' out
And like just experimentin' with the song
Uh, I remember Julian, just like after one of the choruses
Just started doing this like half-time thing
And uhm, I was like, "Man, I want a song that has
Just like the most "Throwyour hands up" drop
Ever and in an unexpected way" (yeah)

Because when you hear the verse first of the song
You don't think that the song is gonna have that
And when it comes out of nowhere, you just can't help
But just like, node your head to it
And it's just one those things that I've been on The Chainsmokers concerts too
And it's, you live for that moment in their concerts (yeah, and it blows your mind)
And that's when everybody gets ballistic (yeah)
And, I just really wanted to have one of those on the record
And definitely to-to play it in a live show

Well, I will say, I was shocked
Because, I mean, you know the popular thing in town right now
Even for more traditional artists is writing the tracks
Which for people who don't know
They're-they're kind of pre-produced instrumentals
And then you lay the lyrics (mm-hm) over them
And-and you sorta create this danceable (yeah) sound
And-and so when I heard this, I was like,"Oh
Automatically, somebody brought him a track and they wrote"
So to know that you started (yeah) with an acoustic guitar is pretty cool (yeah)
That's amazing

Yeah, I think you have more control over a song
I mean, I've definitely written to a ton of tracks in my life (sure, yeah)
But I think you have more control over a song when you do get to write it from scratch
Because, sometimes when you listen to a track
You kinda feel like you're forced to go with the melody that was already created (mm-hm)
But when you go, start from scratch you can really go anywhere, uh, from where you started

Und der nächste Song, über den ich sprechen möchte, ist, äh, Leave Right Now (mm-hm)
Sehr Chainsmoker-mäßig und ich sage das (ja),
nachdem ich gerade The Chainsmokers live (ja) in Konzerten gesehen habe,
was ich noch nie getan habe (ja), und es war überwältigend (ja).
Und so frage ich mich bei einem solchen Song, ähm,
hat es mit einem Track angefangen und dann (nein)
dich zu der Idee geführt, oder wie ist dieser Song entstanden?

Es fing tatsächlich sehr akustisch an.
(Wirklich?) Ähm, wenn man sich also die Strophe zuerst im Refrain anhört,
ist da, weißt du, eigentlich nichts als eine Akustikgitarre
und äh ein bisschen Synth, aber
wir haben den Song zuerst ohne den Drop geschrieben und es
(Wow) Wirklich nur, ähm, am Ende des Refrains
ging es einfach irgendwie zu einer weiteren Strophe über und das war der Song.

Aber im Laufe des Abends
und als wir einfach nur rumhingen
und einfach mit dem Song experimentierten,
äh, erinnere ich mich, dass Julian, einfach nach einem der Refrains,
anfing, dieses Half-Time-Ding zu machen.
Und ähm, ich dachte: "Mann, ich will einen Song, der
einfach den "Wirf deine Hände hoch"-Drop hat,
überhaupt und auf eine unerwartete Weise" (ja).

Denn wenn man die Strophe zuerst hört,
denkt man nicht, dass der Song das haben wird.
Und wenn es aus dem Nichts kommt, kann man einfach nicht anders,
als mit dem Kopf dazu zu nicken.
Und es ist einfach eines dieser Dinge, dass ich auch auf The Chainsmokers-Konzerten war
und man lebt für diesen Moment in ihren Konzerten (ja, und es haut dich um).
Und dann drehen alle durch (ja).
Und ich wollte wirklich so etwas auf der Platte haben
und es definitiv in einer Live-Show spielen.

Nun, ich muss sagen, ich war schockiert,
denn, ich meine, du weißt ja, dass es im Moment in der Stadt angesagt ist,
selbst für traditionellere Künstler, die Tracks zu schreiben.
Was für Leute, die es nicht wissen,
das sind so vorproduzierte Instrumentals.
Und dann legt man die Texte (mm-hm) darüber.
Und man kreiert sozusagen diesen tanzbaren (ja) Sound.
Und als ich das hörte, dachte ich: "Oh,
automatisch hat ihm jemand einen Track gebracht und sie haben geschrieben".
Also zu wissen, dass du (ja) mit einer Akustikgitarre angefangen hast, ist ziemlich cool (ja).
Das ist erstaunlich.

Ja, ich denke, man hat mehr Kontrolle über einen Song.
Ich meine, ich habe definitiv schon zu einer Menge Tracks in meinem Leben geschrieben (sicher, ja),
aber ich denke, man hat mehr Kontrolle über einen Song, wenn man ihn von Grund auf neu schreiben kann.
Denn manchmal, wenn man sich einen Track anhört,
hat man das Gefühl, dass man gezwungen ist, die Melodie zu nehmen, die bereits geschaffen wurde (mm-hm).
Aber wenn man von Grund auf neu anfängt, kann man wirklich überall hingehen, äh, von dem Punkt aus, an dem man angefangen hat.
