Lyrics Censorship - Frank Zappa
Something that has been in your music
And your career for over two decades
Has been the ability to say and express in music what the artist feels
Or wants to say without being pennied by censorship or social restraint
Well I've tried to do it
But see,you know, you can put it into the album
But if nobody ever hears your album it has been censored
And for the last twenty years
That's basically what's happened to all of my music
Because since it doesn't get generally airplay
And always somebody complaining because of what the content is
You know, there's always some complaint from some broadcaster about
What is being said in here
Even to the point where I've gone to radio stations
And found albums which where instrumental albums
With marks on 'em that said, 'Don't Play'
You know, like the guy never even bother to listen to it
To find out whether or not there were any lyrics on it at all
It was instrumental music and they just put it in the disater bin
You know you, it's easy to take a stand and say how you feel about this stuff
And it's another thing to take that stand and try and earn a living
While you're doing that
I've been fortunate where, I've managed to stay in business for twenty years
Without having to bend over for this stuff
And uhm, I wanna keep it that way for the next twenty years
And I think that everybody who writes songs have at least
The right to expect that
