Oft, wenn ich ans Fenster gehe
Nachseh' ob noch alles steht
Den Schuster drüben schustern sehe
Hör' ich wie die Welt sich dreht
Dann füllt sich mein Kopf mit Wasser
Wie aus einem Quell so frisch
Drinnen schwimmt ein großer, nasser
Trunk'ner, lila Fisch
Und der guckt aus meinen Augen
Fängt an, weil er nichts vermisst
Sich vor Freude vollzusaugen
Weil die Welt noch nicht zertöppert ist

Wie an südlichen Gestaden
Steh' ich über Moabit
Kann im Strom der Menschen baden
Der an mir vorüberzieht
Noch habe ich Kopf und Kragen
Beide sind noch unverletzt
Kann noch meine Mütze tragen
Ausgebeult und abgewetzt
Drunter kann ich überlegen
Und mir bleibt noch eine Frist
Zum Spazierengehn im Regen
Der bislang nur Wasser ist

Draußen riecht es gut nach Erde
Nach Benzin, Asphalt und Staub
Drinnen duftet es vom Herde
Nach Rosmarin und Lorbeerlaub
Noch ragt meine Nase frei
Und unbewehrt in die Natur
Keine Gasmaske vor meinem Mund
Stört mich bei der Rasur
Kann noch trinken: "Hoch die Tassen!"
Schnell geschluckt, denn darauf kommt's an

Ich kann mich nicht drauf verlassen
Dass ich's morgen auch noch kann

Kann noch schwarzen Tabak rauchen
Daß kein Krümel übrigbleibt
Den könnt' ich doch nicht mehr brauchen
Denn es raucht sich schlecht entleibt
Lasst uns heut Weihnachten feiern
Schnell – in dulci jubilo –
Mit Neujahrspunsch und Ostereiern
Mit Honig, für den Bär'n im Zoo
Mein Testament ist geschrieben

Und mir bleibt noch etwas Zeit
Vielleicht ein Tag nur, dich zu lieben
Vielleicht ist morgen schon Ewigkeit

Leucht' uns dann der Götterfunken
Funken aus Plutonium ...

Today Still

Often, when I go to the window
I check if everything is still standing
I see the shoemaker across the street working
I hear how the world turns
Then my head fills with water
As fresh as from a spring
Inside swims a big, wet
Drunk, purple fish
And it looks out of my eyes
It starts, because it misses nothing
To suck itself full of joy
Because the world is not yet destroyed

Like on southern shores
I stand above Moabit
I can bathe in the stream of people
That passes me by
I still have head and collar
Both are still uninjured
I can still wear my cap
Bulging and frayed
Underneath I can think
And I still have time
To walk in the rain
Which is only water so far

Outside it smells good of earth
Of gasoline, asphalt and dust
Inside it smells from the hearth
Of rosemary and bay leaf
My nose still juts out freely
And unarmed into nature
No gas mask in front of my mouth
Disturbs me when shaving
I can still drink: "Cheers!"
Swallowed quickly, because that's important

I can't rely on it
That I can do it tomorrow too

I can still smoke black tobacco
So that not a crumb is left
I couldn't use it anymore
Because it smokes badly when you're dead
Let us celebrate Christmas today
Quickly - in dulci jubilo -
With New Year's Eve punch and Easter eggs
With honey, for the bear in the zoo
My will is written

And I still have some time
Maybe just one day, to love you
Maybe tomorrow is already eternity
