Vor mir auf dem Tisch ein Krug voller Bier
Eine weiße Mütze von Schaum darauf
So hab ich es gerne, so sitz ich oft hier
Und räume in meinen Gedanken auf
Und während ich zusehe, wie sich das Licht
In tausend funkelnden Perlen bricht
Denn denk ich an alles und denke an nichts
An gestern und Hopfen, an morgen und Malz
An meine Zeche beim jüngsten Gericht
An Revolutionen und Griebenschmalz
Dann kommt mir die Frage in den Sinn
Weshalb ich wohl noch am Leben bin
Es kracht im Gebälk rings um mich her
In Kindergärten, und in Kirchen sogar
Und wenn ich verschont blieb, leit ichs daraus her
Das ich meistenteils in der Kneipe war
Das heißt: Hier bin ich sicher, draußen brennts allenthalben
Daraufhin bestell ich mir noch einen Halben

Platzte jetzt Charon zur Kneipentür rein
Mitten in solche Gemütlichkeit
Setzte sich zu mir im Lampenschein
Gäb mir zu verstehn: Jetzt ist's an der Zeit
Damit ich's versteh, fegt er mit einem Wisch
Mir meinen vollen Krug Bier vom Tisch
Mit den Worten: "Auf geht's, mein Freund, über den Styx,
Noch vorm Morgengrauen wird übergesetzt
Und schimpfen und fluchen, das hilft Dir jetzt nix!"
Ich sagte: "Herr Charon, noch nicht jetzt
Rationell ist das nicht, wenn Sie nur für mich fahren!"
Ich bestell mir 'nen Halben und für Charon nen Klaren
"Kommn Sie lieber nochmal in zwei bis drei Jahren
Bis dann machen die Großen 'nen neuen Krieg
Dass die Opfer vom letzten nicht vergebens waren
Und dann wird Ihr Kahn so voll, dass er sich biegt!"
So gelingt es mir, Charon selbst einzusalben
Er geht, ich bestelle mir noch einen Halben

In meiner Kneipenphilosophie
Geigt mir ein Geiger unentwegt
In meinem Mittelohr-Jalousie
So schaurig, dass mir meine Brille beschlägt
Und dann geigt er in der Eustach'schen Röhre
Und wenn ich ihn dann ganz deutlich höre
Dann fühle ich mich wie neugeboren
Und alles verfliegt, was mich vorher gequält
Denn ich schließe: Noch ist ja nicht alles verloren
Solange der Geiger geigt und noch nicht zählt
Durchs Kneipenfenster dämmert ein neuer Morgen
Und der Wirt wird mir wohl noch 'nen Halben borgen

That's how I manage to bribe Charon himself

In my pub philosophy
A violinist plays for me constantly
In my middle ear blinds
So eerie that my glasses fog up
And then he plays in the Eustachian tube
And when I hear him clearly
Then I feel reborn
And everything that tormented me before disappears
Because I conclude: Not everything is lost yet
As long as the violinist plays and doesn't count yet
Through the pub window a new morning dawns
And the innkeeper will probably lend me another half
