I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
I'm impervious me
A cellist, or if I wrote books or poetry
Everyone would accept that there's a growth that happens within
There's experience, there's an addition
To your language and to your vocabulary
But for some reason in pop music, that is
People tie it all up with youth, you know
And so even when you're doing great things
Even when you are writing great songs
It's very easy for people to adhere to their own prejudices
You see in the music industry so much where
People are scared to say what they feel
They need that person who's a bit, they
Think is a bit cooler than them to say it
So they can own it, you know
And so they need people to own things before they own it themselves
So it's a battle, it's a real battle to stay working as an artist
Especially when you've been a mainstream
Artist at some point in your time
Especially when there have been times in your career
When you have handed over that responsibility
'Cause you could not be arsed
Or 'cause you're in the wrong headspace
Or because your ADHD just didn't allow you to stay in the room
You know, so I don't entirely blame other people for that
Because if I'd have been more careful
About the choices I made in my career
Maybe I'd have to fight a bit less
I kind of doubt it because I see it
Enough happening all over the place
But yes, you have to come to that point where you are impervious
And you have to find the reason why you are working
And as Sean said earlier, you know
Of course it's lovely to have a hit
It's lovely to, you know, have loads of people buying it
But that cannot be your raison d'être
Because it's not something you can count on
The only thing you can count on is your own craft
And your own decision making
And so, yeah, it's like I will absolutely
Forego being centered in this world
Or having a big platform to make music that suits me
And yes, I will prioritize my own aesthetic than
Somebody who bought my record forty years ago
Which I'm, you know, I'm grateful that
They bought my record forty years ago
Don't get me wrong
But we are all discrete human beings
And we all have a right to make our choices
Whether somebody else thinks they're right or wrong
You know, it's an irrelevance
And so in that sense I'm impervious
You know, it doesn't mean to say that I don't get a pang
Or, you know, have a moment of pain or any of that kind of stuff
It's just I'm also impervious to pain
It's like, that's just a part of life, you can't avoid it
And if you do, then you disengage
And you stop using your time
And my time is getting limited
And so I want to use it well in such a way that suits me
