But there were two "Way we weres" because Marilyn and Alan being very creative and very prolific writers
Finished the song eight weeks before we needed it
And they said, "Well, gee, we never had the opportunity to write a second lyric to the same song"
So, they wrote another lyric to it
To another melody by the way by Marvin Hamlisch
I thought It'd be interesting to, you know, to sing it tonight
Because it wound up on the cutting room floor and
Tonight we figured we'd pick it up and
Sing the other "The way we were" which we don't call "Way we were 2"
But to distinguish it from "The way we were 1"
We call it "The way we weren't"
That's what we call it

When I wander through my mind

In the places memories see

And we were neither innocent nor wise
