Armistice Day

On an African November day
Folks have gathered 'round to pray
In a shed that was once used for cows and horses
On an alter lies the Green and White
An medals gleam in the candle light
On the chests of ex- commanders of the forces
An ageing couple in their grief come forward
Bow and lay their wreath
In memory of their fallen only son
War took him in futility
But changed the course of history
For righteousness another battles won

We will remember them, we will remember them
At the going down of the sun, in the glory of God's dawn
As the last note on the "Last Post" fades away
As the Pipers play "The Flowers o' the forest"
On this our Armistice day

In a town in central Africa
There's a place that was once the cenotaph
And a lonely man goes down there every year
He defies the government of the day
Lays his wreath in his usual way
In his heart there is remorse- in his eyes no fear
On every British village green
The statue of a soldier can be seen
Rifle pointed down and bowed the head
Regardless of whatever the war
The community still bears the scar
