One September Day

Alarm went off, I gotta bounce in an hour
Got outta bed and I jumped in the shower
Brushed my teeth, started ironing my shirt
Threw on my new suit, now it's time for work
No time for breakfast (You're not eating again?)
Sorry love I gotta meet in a ten
Kiss my wife goodbye, my kids I hug them
Told 'em I'll be back and daddy loved them
Pain in my heart as I drove off slow
I didn't know why but I had to go
Jumped on the west side and I started speedin'
Even though deep inside thought I shouldn't be leavin'
Didn't know why then, didn't know the reason
Probably 'cause I wished I was still home sleepin'
Now I'm thick in this traffic all I hear is beepin'
I still got some work to do before my meetin'
Found a garage, get in my car with the keys in
Told 'em that I'd be back early in the evenin'
Crossed the street and looked down at the time
That's when I got a chill goin' down my spine (What the hell?)
Could never rush, shoulda had it wait
It was only 8:30 but it still was late
The work that I had to do would take me more than an hour
Still hadn't even gotten to the north tower
Got to the lobby, the elevator door
Had to travel all the way up to the 98th floor
On the elevator ride talkin' to my man Russ
He said after the meetin' we should go and get lunch
I said no doubt then I felt real dizzy
Had to shake it off, I was too busy
Sat in my office, the clock was tickin'
8:37 Now, soon the plot would thicken
Opened up my suitcase, lookin' file by file
I had to finish up some work knowin' it would take awhile
Goin' through my notes and I started losin' focus
The picture on my desk was all that I could notice
Family trip, that's when my head started spacin'
Wonderin' when will I get my next vacation

The whole building shook, thought it must be a bomb
I ran out the office to see what was wrong
Everybody started panickin', the smoke's gettin' strong
Couldn't go downstairs, crowd's runnin' up
Tellin' me to move 'cause the flames comin' up
Smoke was gettin' thicker and I really couldn't see
Everything was gettin' darker, I was left with just me
I ran in my office and picked up the phone
Punched in my home number, couldn't get a dial tone
I could see the smoke, I could taste the gas
Couldn't keep the window closed, had to break the glass
Started gaspin' out, almost passin' out
That's when I saw all the people straight hangin' out
Thinkin' to myself this all had to be fake
So I closed my eyes, hoped that soon I'd be awake
When I opened them I was in the same place
Now I'm stuck by myself starin' death in the face
I feel it in my heart, it was almost over
Heat come up from the door, showed the flames were closer
I crawled through the smoke and I found my picture
Held it in my arms when I heard a whisper (I love you)
That's when I blacked out
All the smoke I inhaled finally made me pass out
When I woke up I coulda sworn I was floatin'
Thought it was a dream but my eyes were still open
Couldn't see much, everything was lookin' bright
Didn't feel any pain, I was movin' to the light
Just when I thought that my life was gone
I was in the hospital in my new mom's arms
