We're talking to Thomas Rhett all about his new album, Life Changes

And, the next song I wanna talk about is, uh, Leave Right Now (mm-hm)
Very Chainsmoker-sque and I say that (yeah)
Having just seen The Chainsmokers live (yeah) in concerts
Which I've never done (yeah), and it was mind boggling (yeah)
And and so, I wonder with a song like that, uhm
Did it start with a track and then (no)
Lead you to the idea, or how did that song originate?

It actually started very acoustic
(Really?) uhm, so like you know if you listen the verse first in the chorus
It's you know, it's really nothing but an acoustic guitar
And uh a little bit of synth but
We wrote the song without the drop first and it
(Wow) Really just, uhm, at the end of the chorus
It just kinda went to another verse and that was the song

But as the night went on
And as we, were just hangin' out
And like just experimentin' with the song
Uh, I remember Julian, just like after one of the choruses
Just started doing this like half-time thing
And uhm, I was like, "Man, I want a song that has
Just like the most "Throwyour hands up" drop
Ever and in an unexpected way" (yeah)

Because when you hear the verse first of the song
You don't think that the song is gonna have that
And when it comes out of nowhere, you just can't help
But just like, node your head to it
And it's just one those things that I've been on The Chainsmokers concerts too
And it's, you live for that moment in their concerts (yeah, and it blows your mind)
And that's when everybody gets ballistic (yeah)
And, I just really wanted to have one of those on the record
And definitely to-to play it in a live show

Well, I will say, I was shocked
Because, I mean, you know the popular thing in town right now
Even for more traditional artists is writing the tracks
Which for people who don't know
They're-they're kind of pre-produced instrumentals
And then you lay the lyrics (mm-hm) over them
And-and you sorta create this danceable (yeah) sound
And-and so when I heard this, I was like,"Oh
Automatically, somebody brought him a track and they wrote"
So to know that you started (yeah) with an acoustic guitar is pretty cool (yeah)
That's amazing

Yeah, I think you have more control over a song
I mean, I've definitely written to a ton of tracks in my life (sure, yeah)
But I think you have more control over a song when you do get to write it from scratch
Because, sometimes when you listen to a track
You kinda feel like you're forced to go with the melody that was already created (mm-hm)
But when you go, start from scratch you can really go anywhere, uh, from where you started

Pour les avoir vus en concert récemment (ouais)
Ce que je n'avais jamais fait avant (ouais), et c'était hallucinant (ouais)
Et du coup, je me demandais, avec une chanson comme ça, euh
Est-ce que ça a commencé par une piste instrumentale, et ensuite (non)
Ça t'a mené à l'idée, ou comment cette chanson est née ?

En fait, ça a commencé en version très acoustique
(Vraiment ?) euh, donc comme tu sais, si tu écoutes le couplet d'abord, puis le refrain
Il n'y a vraiment rien d'autre qu'une guitare acoustique
Et euh un peu de synthé, mais
On a écrit la chanson sans le drop au début et
(Waouh) Vraiment juste, euh, à la fin du refrain
Ça enchaînait sur un autre couplet et c'était la chanson

Mais au fur et à mesure de la soirée
Et comme on traînait ensemble
Et qu'on expérimentait avec la chanson
Euh, je me souviens de Julian, juste après un des refrains
Il a commencé à faire un truc un peu lent
Et euh, j'étais là : "Mec, je veux une chanson qui a
Un drop du genre "Lève les mains en l'air"
Mais d'une manière inattendue" (ouais)

Parce que quand tu écoutes le couplet de la chanson au début
Tu ne t'attends pas à ce que la chanson ait ça
Et quand ça arrive de nulle part, tu ne peux pas t'empêcher
De hocher la tête en rythme
Et c'est un de ces trucs, j'ai été aux concerts de The Chainsmokers aussi
Et tu vis pour ces moments-là pendant leurs concerts (ouais, et ça te retourne le cerveau)
Et c'est là que tout le monde devient dingue (ouais)
Et je voulais vraiment avoir un truc comme ça sur l'album
Et pouvoir le jouer en concert, c'est sûr

Eh bien, je dois dire que j'ai été surprise
Parce que, tu sais bien ce qui est populaire en ce moment
Même pour les artistes plus traditionnels, c'est d'écrire sur des pistes instrumentales
Ce qui, pour ceux qui ne savent pas
Ce sont des-des sortes d'instrumentaux pré-produits
Et ensuite tu poses les paroles (mm-hm) dessus
Et-et tu crées en quelque sorte ce son dansant (ouais)
Et-et donc quand j'ai entendu ça, je me suis dit : "Ah
Forcément, quelqu'un lui a apporté une piste et ils ont écrit dessus"
Alors savoir que tu as commencé (ouais) avec une guitare acoustique, c'est plutôt cool (ouais)
C'est incroyable

Ouais, je pense qu'on a plus de contrôle sur une chanson
Enfin, j'ai écrit sur des tonnes de pistes instrumentales dans ma vie, c'est sûr (bien sûr, ouais)
Mais je pense qu'on a plus de contrôle sur une chanson quand on peut l'écrire à partir de zéro
Parce que, parfois, quand on écoute une piste instrumentale
On se sent un peu obligé de suivre la mélodie qui a déjà été créée (mm-hm)
Mais quand on part de zéro, on peut vraiment aller où on veut, euh, par rapport à où on a commencé
