We're glad to have you listening to Big Machine Radio and
I think you're gonna be glad you're here because
We're talking to Thomas Rhett all about his new album, Life Changes
We're also playing all the songs off the album

And, the next song I wanna talk about is, uh, Leave Right Now (mm-hm)
Very Chainsmoker-sque and I say that (yeah)
Having just seen The Chainsmokers live (yeah) in concerts
Which I've never done (yeah), and it was mind boggling (yeah)
And and so, I wonder with a song like that, uhm
Did it start with a track and then (no)
Lead you to the idea, or how did that song originate?

It actually started very acoustic
(Really?) uhm, so like you know if you listen the verse first in the chorus
It's you know, it's really nothing but an acoustic guitar
And uh a little bit of synth but
We wrote the song without the drop first and it
(Wow) Really just, uhm, at the end of the chorus
It just kinda went to another verse and that was the song

But as the night went on
And as we, were just hangin' out
And like just experimentin' with the song
Uh, I remember Julian, just like after one of the choruses
Just started doing this like half-time thing
And uhm, I was like, "Man, I want a song that has
Just like the most "Throwyour hands up" drop
Ever and in an unexpected way" (yeah)

Because when you hear the verse first of the song
You don't think that the song is gonna have that
And when it comes out of nowhere, you just can't help
But just like, node your head to it
And it's just one those things that I've been on The Chainsmokers concerts too
And it's, you live for that moment in their concerts (yeah, and it blows your mind)
And that's when everybody gets ballistic (yeah)
And, I just really wanted to have one of those on the record
And definitely to-to play it in a live show

Well, I will say, I was shocked
Because, I mean, you know the popular thing in town right now
Even for more traditional artists is writing the tracks
Which for people who don't know
They're-they're kind of pre-produced instrumentals
And then you lay the lyrics (mm-hm) over them
And-and you sorta create this danceable (yeah) sound
And-and so when I heard this, I was like,"Oh
Automatically, somebody brought him a track and they wrote"
So to know that you started (yeah) with an acoustic guitar is pretty cool (yeah)
That's amazing

Yeah, I think you have more control over a song
I mean, I've definitely written to a ton of tracks in my life (sure, yeah)
But I think you have more control over a song when you do get to write it from scratch
Because, sometimes when you listen to a track
You kinda feel like you're forced to go with the melody that was already created (mm-hm)
But when you go, start from scratch you can really go anywhere, uh, from where you started

мы написали песню без дропа, и она

она как бы переходила в следующий куплет, и это была вся песня.

Но по мере того, как ночь шла,
и мы просто зависали,
экспериментировали с песней,
хм, я помню, Джулиан, прямо после одного из припевов,
начал играть что-то в два раза медленнее.
И, хм, я такой: "Чувак, я хочу песню, в которой будет
самый что ни на есть "вскинь руки вверх" дроп,
причём совершенно неожиданно" (да).

Потому что, когда слышишь первый куплет,
вообще не думаешь, что в песне будет что-то подобное,
и когда это появляется из ниоткуда, просто невозможно

И это как на концертах The Chainsmokers,
ты живёшь ради таких моментов (да, и это просто взрывает мозг).
Именно тогда все сходят с ума (ага).
И мне очень хотелось, чтобы на пластинке был такой момент,
чтобы потом зажигать под него на концертах.

Что ж, должна сказать, я была в шоке,
потому что сейчас в городе модно,
даже среди более традиционных артистов, писать на готовые треки.
Для тех, кто не знает,
это такие, своего рода, заранее спродюсированные инструменталы,
на которые потом накладывается текст (угу),
и в итоге получается этакая танцевальная (да) музыка.
И вот, услышав это, я подумала: "А, ну ясно,
ему кто-то принёс трек, а они под него текст написали".
Так что, узнать, что ты начал (ага) с акустической гитары, это круто (да).
Это потрясающе.

Да, думаю, так у тебя больше контроля над песней.
Конечно, я и сам много писал на готовые треки (конечно, да).
Но мне кажется, что, когда пишешь песню с нуля, ты больше ею управляешь.
Потому что иногда, когда слушаешь трек,
чувствуешь себя обязанным следовать мелодии, которая уже создана (угу).
Но когда начинаешь с чистого листа, ты можешь уйти очень далеко от того, с чего начал.
