Dratewka to był szewc na schwał, co bez mrugnięcia okiem
Odważnie się do walki brał z okrutnie srogim smokiem.
Gdy zmarniał, zwątpił, opadł z sił dwór intelektualny,
Ten prosty szewc na smoka był po prostu idealny!

Szewcem Dratewką zachwyceni zanućmy więc refrenik:

Wędruj po świecie ma śpiewko, śpiewaj po świecie szerokim
Jak dobrze być szewcem Dratewką kiedy się walczy ze smokiem!
Jak dobrze, mamo kochana, mieć tak upojne pomysły,
Żeby smok zżarł z siarką barana, a potem wypił pół Wisły!

Nieźle mieć Dratewki wdzięk i rzeczą jest przyjemną
Rzec narodowi: ′Smok już pękł, róbta se zdjęcia ze mną!'
A król pod brodą go łechce, fortuna sięga do kiesy
Oj, dobrze być Dratewką szewcem, gdy się ma takie sukcesy!

Dratewce, proszę panów, pań, król oddał córki wianek,
Z nadzieją państwo patrzy nań, przez smoka zrujnowane
Dratewka krzyknął: ′Kto nie kiep, ten mą działalność wesprze
Jam srogiej bestii urwał łeb i ja wasz los polepszę!'

Dratewką... zaniepokojeni - zanućmy więc refrenik:

Wędruj po świecie ma śpiewko i wkrąg rozgłaszaj przepięknie,
Jak trudno być szewcem Dratewką, kiedy się smok już rozpęknie...
Wkrąg swary w rodzinnym domu, nowe afery od rana,
Kłótnie i złość, i ni ma komu podrzucić z siarką barana.

Trudno mieć Dratewki wdzięk, ster rządów z wdziękiem chwycić
Kiedy mu krzyczą: "Bodajś pękł!" wkurzeni emeryci.
On na ugodę iść nie chce i nowa robi się heca;
Oj, trudno być Dratewką szewcem, gdy się zbyt wiele obieca!

Dratewka wbija w sufit wzrok i myśli, gryząc palce:
"Ej, przydałby się nowy smok, znów bym się sprawdził w walce..."
Lecz zamiast smoka, proszę najzacniejszych pań i panów,
Szewca Dratewką, mróz czy maj, otacza tłum baranów.

I pochylając łby ponure, barany ryczą chórem:
"Łby nasze twarde jak taran, w nich jedna myśl, bądźmy szczerzy:
Toć smoka zmógł nasz przodek - baran! I nam się za to należy!
Ten weź, Dratewko, kierunek, bo chcemy lubić swych władców,
Zapewnisz nam wikt, o-pierunek, i z nas wybierzesz doradców!"

Serce Dratewki stuk, puk, twarz do baranów się szczerzy;
"Mam u nich dług, wdzięczności dług!' myśli - i prawie w to wierzy...

A morał świeci z wysoka: ten świat jest źle pomyślany:
Poczciwy szewc zwyciężył smoka, a korzystają barany.

The Ballad of Dratewka the Cobbler

Dratewka was a cobbler of renown, who without a blink of an eye
Bravely took to battle with a cruelly fierce dragon.
When the intellectual court withered, despaired, and lost its strength,
This simple cobbler was simply perfect for the dragon!

Enchanted by Dratewka the cobbler, let's hum a refrain:

Wander the world, my little song, sing across the wide world
How good it is to be Dratewka the cobbler when fighting a dragon!
How good it is, dear mother, to have such intoxicating ideas,
For the dragon to devour a ram with sulfur, and then drink half the Vistula!

It's good to have Dratewka's charm and it's a pleasant thing
To say to the nation: 'The dragon has burst, take pictures with me!'
And the king strokes his beard, fortune reaches into his pocket
Oh, it's good to be Dratewka the cobbler when you have such successes!

Dratewka, ladies and gentlemen, the king gave his daughter's wreath,
The ruined nation looks at him with hope
Dratewka shouted: 'Whoever is not a fool will support my wise activity
I tore off the head of the fierce beast and I will improve your fate!'

Dratewka... worried - let's hum a refrain:

Wander the world, my little song, and proclaim beautifully,
How hard it is to be Dratewka the cobbler when the dragon has already burst...
Quarrels all around the family home, new scandals from morning,
Arguments and anger, and no one to throw a ram with sulfur at.

It's hard to have Dratewka's charm, to grasp the helm of government with grace
When angry pensioners shout at him: "May you burst!"
He doesn't want to compromise and a new farce is brewing;
Oh, it's hard to be Dratewka the cobbler when you promise too much!

Dratewka stares at the ceiling and thinks, biting his fingers:
"Hey, a new dragon would come in handy, I would prove myself in battle again..."
But instead of a dragon, I ask the most distinguished ladies and gentlemen,
Dratewka the cobbler, frost or May, is surrounded by a crowd of rams.

And bowing their gloomy heads, the rams roar in chorus:
"Our heads are as hard as a battering ram, there is one thought in them, let's be honest:
Our ancestor, the ram, defeated the dragon! And we deserve it!
Take this direction, Dratewka, because we want to like our rulers,
You will provide us with food and drink, and you will choose advisors from among us!"

Dratewka's heart goes thump, thump, his face smiles at the rams;
"I have a debt to them, a debt of gratitude!' he thinks - and almost believes it...

And the moral shines from on high: this world is ill-conceived:
The kind cobbler defeated the dragon, and the rams benefit.
